Hydroelectric Dam Engineering – Key Details

- Reservoir (Water Intake Area): Stores water at a higher elevation, providing potential energy.
- Trash Rack: Filters debris before water enters the intake system.
- Gated Intake Tower: Controls the flow of water into the penstock.
- Penstock (Steel Pipe): Directs high-pressure water toward the turbines.
- Turbines (not labeled but implied): Convert kinetic energy of flowing water into mechanical energy.
- Spillway & Stilling Basin: Safely release excess water to prevent overflow and reduce erosion.
- Grouting Gallery: Strengthens dam foundations and prevents seepage.
- Drainage Holes: Relieve water pressure inside the dam structure.
- Sluice Gates (Bottom Outlet): Allow controlled release of water for maintenance or flood management.
- Debris Boom: Prevents floating debris from entering the intake.
- High Voltage Transmission Lines: Carry generated electricity to the grid.
- Lower River (Discharge): Returns water downstream after energy conversion.

Why It Matters
Hydroelectric dams are a renewable energy source, converting water’s potential energy into electricity without burning fossil fuels. They also provide flood control, irrigation support, and water supply management.
