NSCDC ANAMBRA WARNS RESIDENTS AGAINST BLOCKING DRAINAGES AS RAINY SEASON INTENSIFIES

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, has advised Anambra residents to stop dumping refuse in drainages and water channels, stressing that the practice will worsen flooding and other avoidable disasters this rainy season.

The NSCDC Anambra State Commandant, Commandant Maku Olatunde, issued the warning on Monday, 8th June 2026, while addressing selected journalists as part of the Command's proactive awareness campaign aimed at reducing the impact of flooding and related hazards at the State Command Headquarters, Awka.

Speaking on behalf of the State Commandant, the Head of Media and Tactical Operations, SC Okadigbo Edwin, noted that heavy rains usually come with higher risks of flooding, building collapse, erosion, and other environmental hazards. He explained that most of these incidents are preventable if residents adopt responsible waste disposal habits and comply with safety guidelines.

Commandant Maku urged citizens to clear drainages around homes and business premises regularly, avoid constructing on waterways, and refrain from any activity that obstructs water flow.

He further stated that blocked drainage channels are a leading cause of floods across communities, often resulting in loss of lives and property damage.

The NSCDC helmsman urged residents of riverine communities to stay alert and be ready to move to higher ground once water levels start rising.

He confirmed that NSCDC, working with the Anambra State Government, NEMA, SEMA, Local Government Mayors, and other partners, has activated comprehensive mitigation strategies to cushion the impact of any incidents during the 2026 rainy season.

In line with this, the Command’s Disaster Management Unit has commenced sensitization and continues to engage key stakeholders across flood-prone LGAs to strengthen preparedness, reduce flood impact, and protect lives and livelihoods.

ANAMBRA GOVERNMENT CONDEMNS CONVOY ATTACK: VOWS TO BRING PERPETRATORS TO JUSTICE

The Anambra State Government has condemned the attack on the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, calling it a direct attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of the state.

According to Anambra State Government Press Statement, signed by Dr. Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, May 31, 2026, the incident occurred on Sunday night, May 31st, 2026, between 8:00pm and 9:00pm at the border between Orumba North and Awka South Local Government Areas. The Chief of Staff was returning from an official assignment when gunmen struck.

" This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our State, as well as the Government and people of Anambra", Dr. Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information said.

Sadly, four people lost their lives in the attack. The State government has expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims, noting that they “deserve justice.”

Dr. Mefor confirmed that the police and other security agencies are actively working to identify, track, and arrest all those involved in the attack.

The government also stressed that while Anambra has enjoyed over a year of improved security, this isolated incident will not weaken its resolve to eliminate all forms of crime in the State.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that can aid investigations.

The Anambra State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting every citizen and ensuring that those responsible for this “evil act” face the full weight of the law.

NSCDC ANAMBRA SET TO ENFORCE PROFESSIONAL ETHICS IN PRIVATE SECURITY OPERATIONS, CONVENES MEETING WITH ALPSPN

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Anambra State Command, has convened a strategic meeting with the Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria, ALPSPN, Anambra Chapter, and issued a stern warning that unlicensed private security companies will be rounded up without hesitation.

The meeting, held at the State Command Headquarters in Awka on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, was aimed at addressing persistent operational lapses, regulatory non-compliance, and unprofessional conduct by some unregistered private security outfits operating in the state.

Addressing participants at the meeting, Commandant Maku Olatunde, the NSCDC Anambra State Commandant said that amid the country’s current security challenges, private security practitioners play a vital role in Nigeria’s security framework.

He stated that the NSCDC’s statutory responsibility covers the registration, licensing, training, regulation, and supervision of Private Guard Companies nationwide, and vowed to enforce professional standards without compromise.

According to him, “It has come to our notice that some individuals masquerading as private security practitioners in Anambra State are engaging in the illegal deployment of guards to both public and private facilities, which is in outright disregard for the Private Guard Companies Act and the operational guidelines issued by the Corps.

“This trend is unacceptable and portrays the noble profession in a bad light. The Command will therefore soon embark on cracking down on any illegal or unlicensed operators found within the state,” he said.

The NSCDC State Boss, while commending the leadership and members of ALPSPN Anambra Chapter for their dedication to strengthening private security operations within the state, warned that the Command remains firm in upholding its supervisory mandate.

“Private security operators are critical partners in national security. Your role in complementing government efforts cannot be overemphasized. However, this partnership must be built on discipline, integrity, professionalism, and strict compliance with regulations,” he stated.

Commandant Maku called on members of ALPSPN to strive for excellence and comply with the establishment acts and operational standards, noting that the future of their relevance to the nation requires collective cooperation, compliance, and coordination.

He urged them to report defaulting companies, harmonize their activities, and elevate the private security industry to have a more prominent impact in the state.

“The NSCDC remains committed to creating a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive. We will sanitize the private security sector and ensure that only qualified, law-abiding, and professional operators function within Anambra State,” he vowed.

In his remarks, the Chairman of ALPSPN, Anambra State Chapter, Dr. Okon Antai, acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of the NSCDC Anambra State Command in monitoring their activities. He thanked the Command for organizing the stakeholders’ forum to deliberate and proffer ways of standardizing the activities of licensed Private Security Companies beyond mere profit maximization.

The ALPSPN leadership pledged full cooperation with the NSCDC and assured that members would comply with all directives to maintain professionalism and uphold the integrity of the private security industry in the state.

Earlier, Deputy Commandant Cecelia Okoye- Iheme , Head of the Command’s Private Guard Company Department, emphasized the importance of licensed Private Security Practitioners to national security. She called on them to provide the Command with timely and relevant intelligence regarding all critical national, state, and local government assets and infrastructure within their domain, as they are often more familiar with the local communities in their operations.

She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to sanitizing the private security sector and ensuring that only qualified and law-abiding operators function within the state.
