ANAMBRA POLICE FROWNS AT BREACH OF AGREED PEACE AS AGULERI–UMUOBA ANAM MISUNDERSTANDING RECORDS ARSON; COMMAND COMMENDS STAKEHOLDERS ADHERING TO PEACE RESOLUTION, DEPLOYS STRATEGY TO ARREST SUSPECTS

The Anambra State Police Command has expressed serious concern over the reported breach of the agreed peace after the on-the-spot assessment led by the Commissioner of Police alongside the Military and other top government officials today 2nd October 2026 arising from the lingering misunderstanding between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities, following an alleged arson incident in the area.

The Command strongly condemns the resort to violence, destruction of property and other acts capable of undermining the prevailing peace and security in the affected communities.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, while reiterating the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, commended community leaders, government officials, security stakeholders and residents who have continued to adhere to the agreed peace resolution and refrain from actions capable of escalating the situation.

The Commissioner stressed that the peaceful resolution of disputes remains the most responsible path to sustainable peace and development, urging all parties to exercise restraint and allow ongoing engagements and lawful processes to address their grievances.

The Command has consequently emplaced strategic security measures in the affected areas and commenced efforts to identify and apprehend persons suspected to have violated the peace resolution or participated in the reported arson and other criminal acts.

CP Nnanna further warned that no individual or group would be allowed to take the law into their own hands, stressing that anyone found culpable after due investigation would be made to face the full weight of the law.

The Command also calls on traditional rulers, town union leaders, youth leaders, women’s groups and other stakeholders in both communities to continue to work with the Police and other security agencies in sustaining calm and preventing further escalation.

The Police reassures the people of Anambra State that the Command remains committed to the protection of lives and property and will continue to employ dialogue, intelligence-led policing and lawful enforcement measures to restore and sustain peace in the affected communities.

Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information on the activities of persons or groups planning to disrupt the peace through the appropriate security channels.

Anambra Makes Pensioners’ Verification Easier from October 5

By MaryAnn Chukwuma

The Anambra State Government will begin verification of state pensioners on Oct. 5, allowing eligible pensioners to complete the exercise digitally from home without travelling to Awka.

The Head of Service, Ngozi Anuli Iwouno, Esq., mni, announced this in a letter dated Sept. 29, addressed to the State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Anambra State Council.

Under the arrangement, pensioners who successfully complete the online verification will not be required to appear physically at the designated centre. Those who need assistance may use a smartphone with support from a trusted family member.

For online verification, pensioners should access the official verification portal: [PORTAL LINK TO BE INSERTED] and provide their National Identification Number (NIN), Staff ID, Bank Verification Number (BVN), telephone number previously submitted to the Pensions Office, and a smartphone with a functional camera.

The process involves entering and confirming identification, personal and bank details, providing information about employment and pension history, and completing a facial capture. Pensioners who successfully complete the exercise will receive a reference number, which they should keep safely as evidence of verification.

Pensioners who cannot complete the digital process because of age, lack of a smartphone or other challenges may undergo physical verification at the designated centre beside UBA Secretariat Branch, Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.

The Head of Service urged all state pensioners to begin the verification process from October 5, use only the official portal, keep their reference numbers after successful completion, and seek assistance from trusted family members where necessary.

She warned pensioners against unauthorised persons and touts, stressing that the exercise is free and no payment should be made to anyone to facilitate verification.

The digital-first approach is intended to reduce unnecessary travel and make the verification process more accessible, while retaining a physical option for pensioners who require in-person assistance.

Ogidi na Olu igwe.

Walter Okafọ Okerulu Nwatakwọchaka Amobi, Founder of the Amobi Dynasty in Ogidi.

The man in the picture below, Igwe Walter Amobi, birthed the Amobi dynasty which dominated the traditional rulership of Ogidi throughout the 20th century.

Walter Kwọchaka was born in the middle of the 19th century to one Abraham Amobi who was an early convert to Christianity when the CMS missionaries first showed up at Ọnịcha in the 19th century. Thus Walter Amobi was educated and raised as a Christian. As an adult living in Ọnịcha, he made a living as a butcher and was prosperous and popular.

Though a non-indigene, he was active in the Palace Council of the Obi of Ọnịcha. He soon caught the eye of the British and in 1898 he was appointed a Political Agent of the Royal Niger Company and placed in command of his own contingent of soldiers.

It was because of his influence with the British and the Royal Niger Company, that he was approached around 1903 by the Ọka people to help invite the Brits to come and end a protracted civil war in Ọka [a story I will still tell.]

The British found him very useful when they mounted the Onitsha Hinterland Expedition which brought a huge swathe of territory behind Ọnịcha into the British Empire. As reward for his services, the British recognised him on July 9, 1904 as the Paramount Chief and, consequently, first king of Ogidi.

Walter Amobi is said to have married 62 wives and fathered some 108 children. It is no surprise then that the Amobi family is reckoned as the largest family unit in Ogidi today.

He died in 1925, and his offspring held the traditional stool of the town till 1998, when the people of Ogidi decided that the traditional stool was not the Amobi family heirloom. The throne remained vacant until 2016 when Igwe Alex Onyido (not an Amobi, apparently) ascended the throne.

PRESS RELEASE

SOLUTION 2.0: 2ND EDITION OF 'ONWA DEZEMBA' COMING, STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT GROUPS TO BE STREAMLINED

On Monday, September 28, 2026, the second-term Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) of the Soludo Government met for the 14th time at Light House, Awka, and made several significant decisions, including the following:

1. Independence Day Celebration On Thursday
The Council reflected on Independence Day, discussing its history and strategic importance to the nation's life. The Council called on Ndi Anambra to brace up for this year's celebration on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with the State Government at Ekwueme Square.

2. AMIC To Take Off With Ready Investors
The Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City (AMIC) is poised to launch in earnest, with the government actively inviting potential investors to engage in discussions, emphasising essential enablers such as access roads, electricity, water supply, and security.

3. Uga Boys Smart Boarding School Still Admitting
The Council also was informed that Uga Boys Smart Boarding Secondary School was still admitting. However, only prospective boarding students need to apply, as spots for day students have been overshot already. The repurposed secondary school now offers both smart school and boarding experience.

4. Integrity Test Of Students Hostels Underway
Council also decided to carry out integrity tests of students' hostels in schools around the state to ensure the safety of students at all times. The Material Testing Lab in the state is to be upgraded, and the law establishing it is to be strengthened to ensure reliable integrity tests at all times.

5. State Law Enforcement Groups To Be Streamlined
Council also resolved to streamline the state law enforcement groups with the aim to eliminate function overlap and proliferation. This will also enhance their functionality, reduce conflicts, and improve accountability to the citizens.

6. Occupied Government Lands To Be Repossessed And Repurposed
Council also resolved to repossess and repurpose all occupied government lands in the state. This decision followed reports of widespread encroachments on government lands, as well as the growing need for land for government projects. Those illegally occupying government lands are advised to vacate them, as there may be no further notice before government crackdown and repossession.

7. 2nd Edition of 'Onwa Dezemba' to Hold in December`
The 2nd Edition of the 'Onwa Dezemba' programme, introduced last December by the Anambra State Government, will be held in December 2026. Many of the events that marked the 2025 edition will feature, alongside documentaries of how Anambra communities celebrate yuletide. The government is determined to harness and institutionalise yuletide, as it is an important period for Ndi Anambra to connect with people at home and participate in various cultural and social activities.

One great Igbo man we always forget DR. CHUBA OKADIGBO (Oyi of Oyi) 1941-2003.

This is one of the fearless leaders we lack today. When will we have people like him again?

Many of our youth know Wike and co, but they don't know the man who shook Aso Rock with grammar and courage.

Here are his performance when he was alive.

1. He was the most brilliant Igbo political brain after Zik
First class political science, PhD in Washington DC, professor at 30. He was called the "Cicero of Nigerian politics" because no one could defeat him in debate.

2. He made Ndigbo relevant in NPN government
When Shagari won in 1979, Okadigbo was his Special Adviser on Political Matters. He used that position to put Igbos in key appointments when others wanted us sidelined.

3. He became Senate President in 1999
When democracy returned, he became the first Igbo Senate President in the 4th Republic (1999-2000). The highest office Ndigbo got. He used it to fight for South-East roads, appointments and allocation.

4. He was the only man who could stand up to Obasanjo fearlessly.
As Senate President, he opposed Obasanjo's anti-Igbo policies and anti-South-East budget. They impeached him because he was too stubborn for the presidency to control, not like Akpabio today. That was Igbo courage.

5. He showed Igbos must build alliances to take power
In 2003, he left PDP and became Buhari's Vice Presidential running mate under ANPP. He told Ndigbo: "If you want presidency, you must negotiate, you must align." That strategy is what Tinubu later used to rig.

6. He died on the battlefield for justice
On September 25, 2003, at a rally in Kano protesting rigging of 2003 election, police fired teargas. He inhaled it, collapsed and died. He literally died fighting for democracy. Not many politicians can say that.

7. He built Oyi and empowered thousands
He built schools, gave scholarships, employed countless Igbo youths in Abuja and Anambra. His house in Ogbunike was open to everybody.

Oyi is gone. Today we have leaders who cannot speak truth to power. When will we have another Okadigbo?

What do you remember about Chuba Okadigbo? Drop it in comments. Let our children know his name.

Body of Missing UNIZIK Pupil, Success Ezenwafor, Swept Away by Flood Recovered

The body of Success Ezenwafor, the UNIZIK Primary School pupil who was swept away by floodwaters in Awka on Tuesday, has sadly been recovered.

“The body of the missing child, Success Ezenwafor has been recovered. The other children are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment at the hospital. I am at Amaku Teaching Hospital at the moment,” Prince Chinedu Okafor, Mayor of Awka South LGA, confirmed.

We commiserate deeply with the Ezenwafor family over this heartbreaking loss. I spoke with a member of the family, who said they are understandably distraught.

According to him, Success’ father vividly remembers his final moments with his son before he left for school yesterday. Success kissed his father on both cheeks, said goodbye and boarded the shuttle bus for school. Tragically, he never returned home.

Two other children from the family who were also involved in the incident were fortunately rescued.

The family member described Success as a brave boy. According to him, Success broke one of the vehicle’s windows, creating an escape route through which others were able to get out. Sadly, he could not make it to safety himself.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ezenwafor family at this extremely difficult time. May God grant them the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss, and may the soul of young Success rest in peace.
