Nigeria is dealing with a kidnapping crisis.
Almost every week, there is another report.
A community attacked.
Travellers abducted.
Families negotiating ransoms.
Businesses adjusting to fear.
Security is no longer just a government issue. It affects investment, commerce, education, and everyday life.
That is why a recent statement from Governor Alex Otti deserves attention.
Speaking on the security situation in Abia, Otti said communities and forests that had become hideouts for kidnappers, bandits, and armed robbers have been reclaimed through coordinated efforts involving security agencies, traditional rulers, and local communities.
For many people, that may sound like a security update.
It is also a development story.
Because every thriving ecosystem starts with one thing:
People must feel safe enough to participate.
Safe enough to travel.
Safe enough to open a business.
Safe enough to attend events.
Safe enough to build.
We talk a lot about innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and economic growth.
But none of those things exist in isolation.
The best ideas struggle in environments where fear becomes part of daily life.
The strongest economies are built where people can move, meet, collaborate, and create with confidence.
Abia’s experience is a reminder that development is not only about roads, buildings, or infrastructure.
It is also about creating an environment where people can live, work, and pursue opportunities without constant uncertainty.
As Nigeria continues to confront security challenges, one question remains:
How much faster would our communities grow if safety was no longer a concern?
Some mindsets keep us stuck. Others help us grow.
What’s one mindset you’ve had to change?
