Meet Ismail Ibrahim, a teacher at the Special Education Centre, Bauchi and one of our DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI teachers.

Ismail is deaf, but can speak. He once learned about AI at the Federal Polytechnic without interpreting support.

Now he wants to strengthen his skills in digital teaching tools, content creation, AI and social platforms—and share what he learns with his students.

His students have never received formal training in digital literacy and online safety.
A teacher learns. A teacher shares. Students gain new opportunities.

This is digital inclusion in action.

Watch Ismail’s story.

Digital skills are not something we learn once and stop. Technology keeps changing, and teachers need opportunities to keep learning, adapting and growing.

Meet Shafiu Usman, a visually impaired teacher and Assistive Technology Instructor at the Special Education Centre, Bauchi.

Shafiu teaches visually impaired students how to use computers and assistive technologies to support their learning and independence.

He is also one of the 50 teachers selected for the DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI programme.

Shafiu’s digital journey is not starting from zero. He previously received digital skills training in 2025, including training in essential computer operations. But as technology continues to evolve, there are new tools and skills he wants to explore and bring into his teaching practice.

Through DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI, Shafiu is looking forward to strengthening his knowledge of Google Docs, Google Forms, digital assessments, Artificial Intelligence, digital literacy and online safety.

What makes his journey particularly meaningful is the opportunity to take these skills beyond himself.

The visually impaired students he teaches have not previously received formal training in digital literacy and online safety. By strengthening his own capacity, Shafiu will be better positioned to introduce his learners to these important skills and help them navigate technology more confidently and safely.

A teacher learns. A teacher shares. More learners benefit.

This is the teacher multiplier approach at the heart of DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI.

And Shafiu’s story reminds us that digital inclusion is not simply about access to devices. It is about creating opportunities for teachers and learners with disabilities to learn, adapt and participate meaningfully in the digital world.

Watch Shafiu’s story and hear directly from him about his digital journey, the challenges he faces, and what he hopes to learn through DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI.

Through the Digi Teach project with Zee Tech Foundation, we’re supporting 50 teachers and 50 deaf students in Bauchi State, Nigeria to build practical digital skills and confidence.

The project will train teachers in digital literacy, online safety and responsible technology use, while also exploring how digital tools and AI can support teaching, lesson planning and professional development. Teachers will then be able to share what they learn with students and their wider school communities.

By combining digital skills training with a focus on inclusion and safe technology use, the project aims to create learning opportunities that can reach beyond the 100 people directly involved.

We’re looking forward to supporting Zee Tech Foundation as they begin the next stage of implementation, including selecting and training the participating teachers.

A big thank you to the team at Zee Tech Foundation for their work to make digital learning more accessible across underserved communities in Nigeria.

During Our DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI Teacher Onboarding, We Were Reminded What Inclusion Really Means

Today’s DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI Teacher Onboarding was filled with excitement, new connections and the beginning of a new learning journey. But one moment stood out for us.

Among the 50 teachers joining the programme were two teachers from the Special Education Centre, Bauchi, whose stories reminded us that inclusion is not just something we talk about—it is something we must practice.

One of the teachers is blind and teaches blind students at the Special Education Centre. We also welcomed a deaf teacher from the same centre who teaches students with special needs.

Their presence was powerful.

They are not simply joining this programme to receive knowledge. They are coming with a willingness to learn, support others and share the knowledge they gain with their students and fellow teachers.

Their participation reflects what we hope DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI will achieve: teachers who are equipped with digital skills and confident enough to take those skills beyond themselves and into their classrooms and communities.

For us, digital inclusion means ensuring that teachers and learners with disabilities are part of the digital future—not left behind by it.

Today, we welcomed 50 teachers into this journey. Each teacher brings a unique story, experience and challenge. Together, we are building a community of educators ready to learn, adapt, share and transform the way technology is used in education.

A heartfelt thank you to 48percent.org for supporting this journey and helping us advance inclusive digital education in Bauchi State.

The journey has begun.
