Our Counsel, Maryam Dan-Habu, participated in the Lagos International Maritime Week (LIMWEEK) 2026, convened under the theme, “From Policy to Practice – Powering Maritime Excellence.”
The conference brought together stakeholders across government, industry, security, law, academia and the wider blue economy to explore practical pathways for translating maritime policy into measurable and sustainable outcomes.
Discussions across sessions on Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea, Maritime Transportation and Port Development, Waterway Safety, Maritime Law & Arbitration, and Maritime Training and Education.
A key takeaway from the conference was clear: maritime excellence requires more than sound policy, it requires effective implementation, accountable institutions and sustained collaboration.
Nigeria’s ambition to become a leading maritime and blue economy hub will depend on our collective ability to turn policy commitments into practical actions that improve safety, attract investment, create opportunities, strengthen indigenous capacity and protect our marine environment.

Can a Private Company Incorporated Under CAMA 1990 Have a Single Shareholder Under CAMA 2020?
In a significant decision, the Court of Appeal unanimously affirmed that section 18(2) of CAMA 2020 permits private companies incorporated before CAMA 2020 to operate with a single shareholder.
In Corporate Affairs Commission v. Primetech Design and Engineering Nigeria Limited & Anor., the Court also clarified the application of CAMA 2020 to existing companies and the limits of the CAC’s powers in imposing restrictions not contained in the Act.
The decision provides greater flexibility for corporate restructuring and strengthens certainty for businesses navigating changes in ownership structures.

Can your cargo arrive safely — and you still end up paying for someone else's loss?
The answer is yes.
Under the maritime doctrine of General Average, where cargo is sacrificed, or extraordinary expenses are incurred to save a ship and everyone on board, all parties who benefited from that sacrifice share the resulting loss or expense.
This longstanding principle is recognised under Section 177 of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025, reinforcing the idea that in maritime law, when one person's sacrifice preserves the common adventure, everyone shares the burden.
At Foundation Chambers, we're committed to making complex legal principles easier to understand, one fact at a time.
