Hepatitis: It's Time To Break It Down

‎Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that damages its ability to function properly, as too many people still lack the information they need to protect themselves, too many remain untested, undiagnosed or untreated still; while stigma and misconceptions continue to stand between people and the care that could save their lives.
‎Viral Hepatitis: Caused by five main strains are: types A, B, C, D, and E. Types A and E usually spread through contaminated food or water, while types B, C, and D typically spread through contact with infected body fluids or blood. Other triggers like heavy alcohol use, toxic chemicals, and autoimmune reactions can also inflame the liver.

‎In 2024, 287 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B or C globally. Sadly, effective vaccines, testing, and treatments already exist, yet about 1.3 million people died from these diseases.

‎On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, we must break it down:
‎•• Break down misinformation with facts.
‎•• Break down stigma with understanding.
‎•• Break down barriers to testing and treatment.
‎•• Break down inequalities that keep lifesaving services out of reach.
‎•• Break down silence by starting conversations.
‎
‎Eliminating hepatitis is not only about having the right tools, it is about ensuring that people and communities can access them.
‎
Its time to learn. Time to get tested. Time to get vaccinated. And time to advocate for accessible care.
‎Together, we can break down the barriers and build a future where no longer takes lives.

Every 30 seconds, someone dies from hepatitis-related liver disease. Yet hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and, in many cases, curable.

At ZEMMA AWARENESS INITIATIVE (ZAI), we reaffirm our commitment to creating healthier communities through awareness, education, screening, vaccination, and linkage to care.

This year’s observance is a reminder that ending hepatitis requires collective action. Together, we can increase awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure that no one is left behind.

DEDASRI was honoured to participate in the launch of the Southeast Human Rights Bureau and the unveiling of the Open-Source Reporting Platform, organised by the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) with support from the Ford Foundation, 23rd - 24th July, 2026

Our Executive Director joined other human rights defenders, government institutions, security agencies, civil society organisations, and development partners from across the South-East to advance dialogue on protecting human rights, promoting accountability, and strengthening the rule of law.

The event provided an opportunity to engage with distinguished leaders in the human rights sector, including Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo (SAN), former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons and Founder of WACOL, whose keynote reinforced that respect for human rights is the foundation of lasting peace and security. We were also inspired by the insightful leadership of Very Rev. Monsignor Prof. Obiora Ike, Chairman of the occasion, who called for renewed commitment to justice, ethics, and the rule of law.

The establishment of the Southeast Human Rights Bureau is a significant milestone towards improving documentation of human rights violations, supporting victims, strengthening early warning systems, and promoting institutional accountability across the region.

At DEDASRI, we remain committed to collaborating with partners to advance human rights, justice, good governance, and sustainable peace for all.

Human trafficking thrives in silence, but justice is possible when survivors are empowered to speak out.

Identified by trafficking survivors during a training programme in Abeokuta, a suspected trafficker was apprehended, prosecuted, and, more than a year later, convicted by the court. The judgment also awarded ₦10 million in compensation to the survivor, demonstrating that accountability is achievable when victims and survivors are supported.

This case is a powerful reminder of the importance of survivor-centred approaches, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to ending human trafficking.

DEDASRI Condemns Flogging of a Delta State Indigene Over Criticism of an Abandoned NDDC Road Project

Divine Era Development and Social Rights Initiative (DEDASRI) strongly condemns the involvement of a Local Government Chairman in Delta State in the public flogging of an indigene reportedly for expressing concerns over an abandoned NDDC road project.

In a democratic society, citizens have the constitutional right to peacefully express their opinions, demand accountability, and question the performance of public officials without fear of intimidation, violence, or retaliation. Acts of brutality against citizens for exercising these rights are unacceptable and pose a grave threat to Nigeria's civic space and democratic governance.

While the reported arrest of those allegedly involved is a welcome first step, DEDASRI insists that this matter must not be swept under the carpet. A thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation must be conducted, and anyone found culpable, regardless of status or position, should face appropriate legal sanctions. Accountability must go beyond mere arrests to ensure justice is served and to deter future violations.

Public office is a position of trust and service, not an instrument of oppression. Democratic leadership must be anchored on respect for human rights, the rule of law, and responsible engagement with citizens.

DEDASRI calls on the relevant authorities to ensure justice is done and seen to be done while taking concrete measures to safeguard civic freedoms and protect every Nigerian's right to freedom of expression.
