Kidnappers Raise Jezco Chairman’s Ransom Demand to N1.5bn After Anambra Abduction

The kidnappers of Jezco Group Chairman, Chief Sir Joseph Ezeokafor, have reportedly increased their ransom demand to N1.5 billion, days after initially demanding N700 million for his release.

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the businessman’s family had reportedly accepted the initial N700 million demand in an effort to secure his freedom. However, the abductors later raised the ransom to N1.5 billion before allegedly cutting off communication with the family.

The development has complicated ongoing efforts to secure Ezeokafor’s release, with attempts to re-establish contact with the kidnappers reportedly proving unsuccessful.

The septuagenarian businessman was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday while leaving his residence for a prayer ground as part of his annual spiritual retreat. Reports indicate he had left his security details behind, leaving him vulnerable to the attack.

More than a week after the abduction, the Anambra State Police Command and state government have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, despite growing concern among business leaders, associates and members of his community.
