GOVERNOR ALIA’S OUTINGS IN NEW YORK DURING 81ST UNGA
New York | Tuesday, September 29, 2026
The just-concluded 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York provided Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, with an opportunity to participate in high-level diplomatic engagements, side events and bilateral discussions focused on development, investment and international partnerships for Benue State.
The 2026 UNGA brought together world leaders, government officials, development partners, investors and representatives of international organisations to deliberate on issues affecting global development, partnerships and Africa’s role in international decision-making.
For Governor Alia, the gathering also provided a platform to present Benue State’s economic potential, engage potential investors and development partners, and highlight efforts by his administration to improve the lives of citizens at the grassroots.
GOVERNOR ALIA RECEIVES AFRICAN LEADERSHIP AWARD
One of the notable moments of Governor Alia’s engagements in New York was his recognition with the African Leadership Award for Grassroots Development at a high-level African leadership gathering.
According to the statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, mnipr, the recognition placed Governor Alia alongside other African leaders who received awards in different leadership categories.
Among those mentioned were President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, Prime Minister Philip Edward Davis of The Bahamas and Prime Minister John Briceño of Belize.
The gathering also brought together members of the African diaspora and provided an avenue for discussions on leadership, development and Africa’s relationship with the international community.
The recognition, according to the statement, drew attention to the Governor’s grassroots development agenda in Benue State and the administration’s efforts to extend development initiatives to communities across the state.
SEEKING INVESTMENT AND DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIPS
Beyond the award ceremony, investment and development partnerships formed an important part of Governor Alia’s engagements in New York.
In an interview following the UNGA activities, the Governor explained that his administration was using the international gathering to establish contacts with investors and development partners at a time when Benue State was seeking to expand its productive capacity.
Agriculture and industrialisation featured prominently in the discussions.
Governor Alia spoke about efforts to revive and establish industries capable of processing agricultural products in Benue, including fruit and juice concentrates. He also highlighted renewed activities around the state’s soybean value chain.
The Governor emphasised the need for Benue to move beyond the export of raw agricultural products by increasing local processing, manufacturing and investment.
According to him, greater investment in processing would help retain more of the value generated from Benue’s agricultural resources within the state while creating additional economic opportunities.
LINKING AGRICULTURE WITH INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
Governor Alia’s comments on soybean production also highlighted the administration’s approach of connecting agricultural production with industrial development.
As farmers increase production in areas for which Benue is traditionally known, the administration is seeking to strengthen the connection between farming, processing facilities, markets and investment.
The stated objective is to improve opportunities for farmers while creating employment and supporting other economic activities around the agricultural value chain.
AFRICA’S REPRESENTATION ON THE GLOBAL STAGE
Governor Alia’s New York engagements also touched on Africa’s role in global affairs.
Reacting to calls during the UNGA for permanent representation for Africa on the United Nations Security Council, the Governor argued that Africa’s contributions to global peace, stability and development should be reflected in the international institutions where major decisions are made.
He also pointed to Nigeria’s historical role in supporting liberation efforts across Africa and contributing to peace and development on the continent.
His comments formed part of the broader Nigerian and African conversation about greater African representation in global institutions.
TAKING THE BENUE STORY TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
Overall, Governor Alia’s activities in New York provided an opportunity for the Benue State Government to present the state’s development priorities to an international audience.
While the African Leadership Award brought recognition to the Governor’s grassroots development agenda, his engagements with investors and development partners focused attention on opportunities for partnerships that could support Benue’s economic development.
The Governor also used the occasion to speak about agriculture, industrialisation, investment and Africa’s representation in global institutions.
New York therefore provided Governor Alia with a platform to present what Benue State has to offer: a state with significant agricultural potential, growing industrial ambitions and opportunities for investment and partnerships.
As the administration continues to pursue its development agenda, the engagements at the 81st UN General Assembly represent an effort to build international relationships that could support development initiatives in Benue State.
