This International Youth Day, the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations” reminds us that while young people face different challenges across regions and communities, many share the same fundamental aspirations — dignity, quality education, decent work, opportunity, and a voice in the decisions that affect their future.

Following our recent training and empowerment programme for artisans and entrepreneurs, the SHIFT team paid a courtesy visit to the Plateau State Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

We were received by the Hon. Commissioner, Mohammed S. Nyalun, and his team for discussions focused on stimulating economic growth on the Plateau. Conversations explored opportunities across the value chain, strengthening local businesses, supporting entrepreneurs, and creating an enabling environment for products and services to move from production to sustainable markets.

The engagement reflects our commitment to connecting skills development with the wider systems needed for businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive. By strengthening collaboration between government, businesses, and development organizations, we can create more opportunities for inclusive economic growth across the state.

On Wednesday, July 29, The SHIFT Initiative, in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Goals Project Support Unit, Plateau State, hosted a one-day training and empowerment programme for artisans and entrepreneurs.

The programme equipped participants with practical financial literacy skills to help them strengthen and scale their businesses. As part of the empowerment initiative, work equipment was distributed to participants by the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, ably represented by the Deputy Governor, Ngo Josephine Piyo.

By investing in knowledge and providing the right tools, we are creating opportunities for individuals to grow sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the economic development of their communities.

Democracy is strongest when citizens are informed, engaged, and empowered to participate in shaping the future of their communities. It flourishes when institutions are accountable and governance processes are transparent, inclusive, and accessible to all.

This Democracy Day, we celebrate not only our democratic journey but also the collective responsibility of citizens and government to uphold the values of participation, transparency, and justice.

At The SHIFT Initiative, we remain committed to fostering civic engagement and promoting systems that create opportunities for every voice to be heard.

Empowering young people to know, protect, and promote human rights starts with education.

In partnership with the National Human Rights Commission, The SHIFT Initiative supported the launch of Human Rights Clubs in secondary schools across Jos, Plateau State. These photos capture moments from GSS Giring and GSS Kufang, where students were introduced to platforms that will help them become informed advocates for dignity, justice, and positive change within their schools and communities.

This World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting the natural resources that support our communities and future generations. Through initiatives such as tree-planting campaigns, climate justice advocacy, environmental education, and partnerships focused on sustainable development, The SHIFT Initiative continues to play its part in building a healthier and more resilient planet.

Every tree planted, every conversation started, and every action taken brings us one step closer to a more sustainable future.
