Deafness (hearing loss) can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired later.
Common causes include:
Genetic/hereditary conditions
Infections during pregnancy such as rubella or cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Birth complications, including severe lack of oxygen or extreme prematurity
Ear infections, especially chronic middle-ear infections
Wax or foreign-body blockage of the ear canal
Perforated eardrum
Prolonged or sudden exposure to loud noise
Aging (age-related hearing loss)
Infections such as meningitis, measles, or mumps
Ototoxic medicines—certain drugs can damage the inner ear
Head or ear injuries
Inner-ear disorders, such as Ménière’s disease
Tumors affecting the auditory nerve, such as vestibular schwannoma
Hearing loss can also be classified as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed, depending on which part of the hearing system is affected.
