Ziva Community Initiative (ZCI), alongside the SPRiNG Nigeria team and fellow implementing partners, paid an advocacy visit to the Director-General Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PSPBA) to formally kick-start the implementation of SPRiNG Year 3 programme in Plateau State.

Led by the SPRiNG North-Central Regional Lead, Mr. Mujidang Sitdang, the engagement brought together implementing partners working across different locations and thematic areas to introduce the Year 3 programme and strengthen collaboration with PSPBA.

The visit provided an opportunity for each implementing partner to share their project focus, highlighting their objectives, target locations and proposed areas of collaboration with the Agency.

The Director-General of PSPBA welcomed the SPRiNG team and partners and expressed the Agency’s readiness to work with all implementing organisations. The DG also affirmed the Agency’s commitment to providing support and facilitating collaboration where possible.

For ZCI, the visit marks an important step towards strengthening institutional partnerships and advancing our commitment to inclusive peacebuilding, community resilience and peaceful communities across Plateau State.

When Communities Have the Knowledge, They Can Lead the Change.

What happens when the people closest to our natural resources are equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect them?

They become stronger leaders.
They make better decisions.
And they are better prepared to build resilient communities.

Recently, Ziva Community Initiative brought together leaders of ASM and farmers’ cooperatives from Wase and Kanam LGAs, Plateau State, for a two-day capacity-building training focused on responsible mining, climate resilience, and sustainable community development.

The conversations went beyond the classroom.

Participants explored how climate change and climate risks are affecting their communities and livelihoods, and learned practical approaches to Climate-Smart Agriculture, environmental management, and sustainable resource use.

They also strengthened their understanding of **cooperative governance, responsible ASM practices, Community Development Agreements (CDAs), Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and financial literacy—skills that can help them make informed decisions and lead more effectively within their communities.

For us at Ziva, the training was not simply about sharing knowledge. It was about putting communities at the centre of solutions.

Because building climate-resilient and sustainable communities starts with empowering the people who live, work, farm, mine, and lead there.

Knowledge is a starting point. Action is what creates change.

As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day 2026, we celebrate the resilience of our people and reaffirm the democratic values of participation, accountability, justice, and inclusion that form the foundation of a prosperous society.
This occasion is not only a celebration, but also a reflection.

Across the country, many Nigerians continue to grapple with insecurity, violence, displacement, and economic hardship. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community whose aspirations for peace and prosperity have been disrupted.

A strong democracy is measured not only by periodic elections, but by its ability to protect lives, uphold human rights, ensure justice, and deliver accountable governance that leaves no one behind. Democracy must translate into safety, dignity, and opportunities for all citizens.

As we mark this year's Democracy Day, let us renew our collective commitment to building a Nigeria where peace, security, justice, and inclusive development are realities for everyone.

We are thrilled to announce that Ziva Community Initiative is heading to Cape Town for the Investing in African Mining Indaba 2026. As one of the ten selected winners of the Community Voices Video Competition by the Impact Facility and Hyve Group we are honored to bring the authentic, lived experiences of Nigerian artisanal miners to this global stage. Elevating these stories is vital to grounding this year's theme, "Stronger Together: Progress Through Partnership," in the real-world challenges and triumphs of critical mineral regions.

On Tuesday, February 10, we will move beyond corporate strategy to discuss what meaningful partnership looks like in practice during the panel session moderated by Candice Jumwa of the Impact Facility at the Ngorongoro Crater Stage.

We are looking forward to exploring these solutions alongside our very own Maureen Mato and fellow experts Nkosi Sibanda, Alpha Ntayomba, and Dr. Matondo Estrela G. Cardoso, PhD. Together, they will highlight how Ziva's focus on safety and sustainable livelihoods can serve as a model for an inclusive mineral transition that ensures the people at the heart of extraction are no longer left behind.

As we step into 2026, We do so with renewed commitment to advancing inclusive, evidence driven solutions at the intersection of community development, energy transition, and climate action.

In the year ahead, our work will place strong emphasis on national and subnational policy engagement, building on field research and stakeholder dialogues focused on the role of artisanal and small-scale mining in Nigeria’s low-carbon future. We will continue to advocate for sustainable, climate-smart, and gender-responsive approaches that integrate mining communities into Nigeria’s energy transition agenda.

2026 will also see us deepen our focus on women’s participation and leadership across renewable energy, agriculture, and extractive value chains, recognising the critical role of women in driving resilient livelihoods and just transitions. Our programmes will continue to prioritise community voices, practical policy recommendations, and collaboration between government, civil society, research institutions, and the private sector.

As Nigeria works towards its climate and development commitments, Ziva remains committed to bridging research, policy, and community realities to support reforms that are inclusive, locally grounded, and forward-looking.
