In the last year, we've had the privilege of working with some incredibly talented founders and business owners.

Skill is not the problem. Passion is not the problem. Most founders have both. But one subtle and often overlooked trap we've observed is comfort.

Not comfort in the traditional sense of doing nothing, but comfort with where the business currently is.

Comfort with the current customers. Comfort with the current revenue. Comfort with the current way of operating. Comfort with being called a startup.

Over time, that comfort becomes dangerous.

Because while the founder is celebrating stability, the market is changing.
Customer expectations are changing.
Technology is changing.
Competition is changing.

And the business begins to drift into irrelevance without noticing.

One lesson we continue to learn is this:

Don't stay in the startup lane for too long. A startup is meant to be a phase, not an identity. The goal is not to remain a startup. The goal is to become a sustainable business.

Watch it. What feels like a comfort zone today may actually be a trap.

Perception

Not everyone will build a startup. But everyone can invest in one. And that is where the real gap is. Because many people see startups as risky… yet remain comfortable with a system that is equally uncertain. Your 8–5 job is not risk-free. It is simply a familiar risk.

The deeper issue is not access. It is perception. The inability to see the value of investing in small, local ventures… to participate in building something early…
to share in growth before it becomes obvious. MJ DeMarco calls this financial mediocrity. A system that conditions people to: avoid risk, lower expectations and settle for delayed outcomes.

A path he describes as
“Live poor, die rich.”

But here is the paradox: The same people who avoid startup risk often embrace slow systems that quietly erode their potential.
