Day 03, Lesson 03🥳

Over the years, we have seen how much the quality of that work depended on what happened inside the organization.

Governance, financial management, safeguarding, risk management, staff development, and clear operating systems all affect whether a program is responsible, effective, and able to withstand pressure.

Strong systems protect the people we serve, support our team, build trust with partners, and help us respond when circumstances change. Institutional strength is part of impact.

At Bridge Connect Africa Initiative, we have learned to see institutional strengthening not as administrative work separate from impact, but as part of impact itself.

As the development sector continues to talk about sustainability, we also need to ask:

Are we building organisations and institutions that are capable of sustaining the change we want to see?

DAY 2; LESSON 2🎉

Over eight years, we have learned that communities are not simply beneficiaries of development interventions. They are holders of knowledge, experience and solutions.

Our work taught us to listen with greater humility. People understand their communities, relationships, pressures, and possibilities in ways that an outside organization cannot fully see. Their knowledge improves the way a problem is defined and the choices made in response.

We have seen programs become stronger when community members help set priorities, shape activities, define success, and review progress.

For us, local ownership is a daily practice. It means staying open when community feedback challenges our assumptions. It means paying attention to whose voice is missing. It means making room for women, girls, and young people to influence decisions from the beginning.

Durable change grows from that shared work.

For eight years, Bridge Connect has worked alongside communities, institutions and partners to create change. Along the way, we have learned that meaningful change is not always immediate, visible or easy to measure.

For the next 8 days, we are sharing 8 lessons that have shaped how we work, and how we are thinking about the future,  as we commemorate our recent milestone.

One of the biggest lessons our eight years of work have taught us is that change takes longer than a grant cycle.

A project can make girls return to school, community leaders can commit to protecting children, policies can be adopted, people can gain new skills and opportunities. Yet the deeper shifts in behavior, social norms, and institutional practice often take much longer.

We learned to design with that longer horizon in mind. From the beginning of a program, we think about who will continue the work, which local structures can carry it, what knowledge needs to be documented, and how responsibility will gradually move into the hands of communities and institutions.

Follow us as we share 8 lessons we took from our 8 years journey for the next 8 days.

For many women, earning a living and participating fully in the local economy is still made harder by Gender-based violence, limited opportunities, and barriers that are felt at home, in communities, and in institutions.

With support from the Embassy of France in Nigeria(Ambassade de France au Nigéria), 17 civil society organisations(CSOs) came together in Kano for the WAVES Phase II CSO Coalition Advocacy and Message Development Workshop

Bringing evidence, experience, and lessons from their work with women and communities into one room, participants examined the barriers connecting women’s economic empowerment, participation, GBV, and access to supportive policies. They worked together to create clear, audience-specific advocacy messages.

These messages provide a foundation for coalition’s advocacy across policy engagement, radio, digital and grassroots communications.

Bridge Connect remains committed to giving the coalitions like this a shared voice as we continue to push for stronger coordinated action on women’s economic empowerment and GBV prevention in Kano.

It’s Thursday, and we are throwing it back to our virtual dialogue, building on the conversation from the Africa Mindset Reset Forum 2026🥳🎉

We created a platform for young people to come together, question old ways of thinking, and examine what it takes to build an Africa where they have greater access, agency, and a meaningful place in decision-making.

Hosted by the African School of Governance(African School of Governance - ASG) in Kigali, Rwanda, the conversation went beyond asking what is wrong with Africa. It challenged young people to think about the role they can play in changing the systems, choices, and mindsets that shape the continent.

At Bridge Connect Africa Initiative, we believe young people should not only be invited into conversations about Africa’s future. They should have the space, support, and platforms to shape that future.

Our commitment to youth participation means showing up in these conversations, creating opportunities for young voices, and supporting young people to move from participation to influence.

If you could change one mindset about young people and Africa, what would it be? Let us hear from you

When women have the knowledge and skills to build resilience, the impact can reach beyond their homes.

Adama started with a vegetable garden. Today, she is supporting other women to practise climate smart agriculture and share what she has learned.

As part of Women Against Violence Empowered through Sustainability (WAVES) II post project engagement, supported by the Embassy of France in Nigeria (Ambassade de France au Nigéria), Bridge Connect is returning to communities to listen, learn and understand what happens after the project activities have ended.

For us, lasting impact is not only about what happens during a project. It is about what women continue to do with what they have learned.

Join us today, in investing in women.

Behind the conversations, community engagements, advocacy efforts and stories of change are people who care deeply about the work and the communities we serve.

At Bridge Connect Africa Initiative (BCAI), we work across women empowerment, youth leadership and participation, girls’ education, advocacy and community development.

Our work takes us from communities to policy spaces, where we build partnerships, generate evidence and support people to have a stronger voice in the decisions that affect them.

This video offers a small look into that work and the people behind it.

We are proud of the work we have done, but we are even more focused on what remains to be done.

As we continue to grow, we welcome partners and organisations who believe in investing in people, strengthening communities and supporting practical solutions that create lasting opportunities.

Follow us for more updates, stories and insights from our work. Happy New Week🎊🎉

Digital inclusion is not just about having a device. It is also about who has the opportunity to learn, access information and participate meaningfully online.

Through the AGYW Digital Inclusion Project, supported by BBC Media Action , Bridge Connect worked with 357 girls across 12 communities and 3 LGAs in Kano State, while also engaging parents, families and community stakeholders who influence girls’ digital experiences.

Along the way, we saw important changes. Parents explored safer ways to support girls online, while girls shared what they learned with their families and communities.

But 3 LGAs out of 44 is only a small part of the work ahead.

Many girls still face barriers to digital access, skills and participation. Expanding access means investing in girls and creating communities that understand, support and encourage their digital growth.

Every girl deserves the chance to learn, connect and take part in the digital world.

The recent Africa Mindset Reset Forum, convened by the Africa School of Governance in Kigali, Rwanda, brought together leaders and young people from across the continent to rethink Africa’s leadership mindset and explore the shift from Pan-Africanism to Meta-Africanism.

Bridge Connect Africa Initiative is taking the conversation forward by bringing together young leaders and experienced voices from across Africa to ask:

“What does a mindset reset mean for young Africans and what will it take to move from being beneficiaries of systems to becoming co-authors of Africa’s future?”

Through Access, Agency and Participation, we will connect the ideas emerging from Kigali with the lived realities of young Africans already shaping change across the continent.

Join us as we continue the conversation and explore what it truly means for young people to take the mantle of Africa’s mindset reset.
