THE BABY WASN’T MINE — EPISODE 1
The Day My Wife Gave Birth
THE BABY WASN’T MINE — EPISODE 1
Daniel stood outside the hospital delivery room, pacing from one end of the corridor to the other.
His shirt was soaked with sweat.
His wife, Cynthia, had been in labour for almost eight hours.
Every time a nurse opened the door, Daniel rushed toward her.
“Is my wife okay?”
“She’s fine. Please be patient.”
But patience was the last thing Daniel had.
He had been waiting for this day for almost four years.
Four years of marriage.
Four years of hospital appointments.
Four years of prayers.
Four years of people asking questions they had no business asking.
“When are you people having children?”
“Have you gone for fertility treatment?”
“Maybe you should visit a spiritualist.”
Some relatives had even started suggesting that Daniel should marry another woman.
But he refused.
He loved Cynthia.
She was his best friend.
His wife.
His home.
And now, finally, they were about to become parents.
Suddenly, a baby’s cry came from the delivery room.
Daniel froze.
His eyes immediately filled with tears.
A nurse stepped out.
“Congratulations, sir.”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
“Congratulations?”
“Yes. Your wife has delivered a baby boy.”
Daniel covered his face with both hands.
“Thank God!”
He laughed and cried at the same time.
“A boy?”
“Yes.”
Daniel hugged the nurse without thinking.
“Thank you! Thank you so much!”
He quickly pulled out his phone.
He wanted to call his mother.
He wanted to tell everyone.
After four years, his son had finally arrived.
But before he could make the call, another nurse walked out.
“Sir, you can see your wife now.”
Daniel rushed inside.
Cynthia looked exhausted.
Her hair was scattered, and sweat covered her forehead.
But the moment she saw Daniel, she smiled.
“Baby…”
Daniel walked toward her.
“You did it.”
Cynthia began crying.
“We did it.”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
Then he looked toward the tiny baby wrapped in a white blanket.
His heart melted.
“My son.”
He carefully picked up the baby.
The baby was sleeping peacefully.
Daniel stared at him.
He had imagined this moment countless times.
He kissed his tiny forehead.
“Daddy is here.”
Cynthia watched him silently.
Daniel looked at her.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For giving me the greatest gift of my life.”
Cynthia smiled.
“You deserve it.”
Daniel looked at the baby again.
Then something caught his attention.
He frowned slightly.
The baby had a very light complexion.
Daniel looked at Cynthia.
Then at the baby.
Then back at Cynthia.
He forced a smile.
“He’s beautiful.”
Cynthia nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel didn’t say anything else.
He didn’t want to spoil the moment.
Besides, babies changed as they grew.
At least, that’s what he told himself.
⸻
Two days later, Daniel took his wife and newborn son home.
Their house was already decorated.
Balloons were everywhere.
His mother had prepared food.
His younger sister had bought baby clothes.
Everyone was celebrating.
Daniel carried the baby proudly.
“My son!”
His mother laughed.
“Give me my grandson!”
Daniel handed the baby over.
His mother stared at him.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Daniel.”
“Yes, Mum?”
“Come here.”
He followed her into the kitchen.
“What is it?”
She lowered her voice.
“Don’t be angry with me.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why would I be angry?”
His mother hesitated.
“The baby…”
“What about him?”
She looked toward the living room.
“Doesn’t he look different from you?”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Mum.”
“I’m not saying anything bad. I’m just asking.”
“He’s a newborn.”
“I know.”
“Newborn babies don’t all look the same.”
His mother nodded slowly.
“You’re right.”
Then she walked away.
Daniel stood there for a few seconds.
Something about the conversation bothered him.
But he pushed it aside.
Three months passed.
Daniel loved his son more than anything.
He bought him expensive clothes.
He stayed awake at night whenever the baby cried.
He even learned how to change diapers.
His friends laughed at him.
“Daniel, fatherhood has finished you!”
Daniel would smile.
“I don’t care.”
He loved being a father.
But there was one thing he couldn’t ignore.
The baby didn’t look like him.
Not even a little.
Daniel had dark skin.
Cynthia had dark skin.
But their son was much lighter.
His eyes were different.
His hair was different.
And sometimes, when Daniel stared at the baby’s face, he felt a strange uncertainty he couldn’t explain.
One evening, Daniel was sitting on the bed while Cynthia bathed the baby.
He watched quietly.
“Cynthia.”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
She turned.
“What?”
“Does our son look like me?”
Cynthia stopped.
She stared at him.
“Why are you asking me that?”
“Just answer me.”
She smiled nervously.
“Of course he looks like you.”
Daniel laughed.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Which part?”
Cynthia looked away.
“His nose.”
Daniel touched his nose.
“My nose?”
“Yes.”
Daniel smiled.
“Okay.”
But something inside him remained unsettled.
⸻
One Saturday afternoon, Daniel was at work when his younger sister, Amanda, called him.
“Brother.”
“Yes?”
“Where are you?”
“At work. Why?”
“Please don’t get angry.”
Daniel sat up.
“What happened?”
“I went to see Cynthia.”
“Okay.”
“And I saw the baby.”
Daniel’s heart skipped.
“What about him?”
Amanda hesitated.
“I don’t know how to say this.”
“Say it.”
“I think you should do a DNA test.”
Daniel went silent.
“What?”
“I said you should do a DNA test.”
“Why?”
“Because…”
Amanda lowered her voice.
“The baby doesn’t look anything like you.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“My mother said the same thing.”
“Then maybe you should listen.”
“Are you accusing my wife?”
“No.”
“Then don’t say things like this.”
“Daniel, I’m your sister. I’m not trying to destroy your marriage.”
“Then what are you trying to do?”
“Protect you.”
Daniel ended the call.
His hands were shaking.
He stared at his computer screen, but he couldn’t concentrate.
For the first time since his son was born, a terrible thought entered his mind.
What if the baby wasn’t his?
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Cynthia would never do that.”
But another voice inside him whispered:
Are you sure?
⸻
That evening, Daniel returned home earlier than usual.
Cynthia was in the sitting room feeding the baby.
She smiled when she saw him.
“You’re back early.”
Daniel didn’t respond immediately.
He stared at her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Cynthia looked worried.
“Daniel?”
He walked closer.
Then he looked at the baby.
“Cynthia…”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
She swallowed.
“What?”
“Would you be willing to do a DNA test?”
The spoon in Cynthia’s hand fell to the floor.
Silence filled the room.
She stared at her husband.
“What did you just say?”
Daniel’s voice was low.
“I want a DNA test.”
Cynthia slowly stood up.
“Why?”
“I just want to be sure.”
“Sure of what?”
Daniel looked at the baby.
“That he’s mine.”
Cynthia’s face suddenly became pale.
She took one step backward.
“Daniel…”
“Yes?”
“I…”
She couldn’t finish the sentence.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why are you shaking?”
Cynthia began crying.
Daniel’s heart started beating faster.
“Cynthia?”
She covered her face.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel froze.
“Sorry for what?”
Cynthia continued crying.
Daniel moved closer.
“Look at me.”
She refused.
“Cynthia, look at me!”
She slowly raised her head.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel…”
“Yes?”
“The baby…”
She paused.
Daniel’s heart nearly stopped.
“The baby isn’t…”

QUESTION: If you were Daniel, would you demand a DNA test after noticing that your child looks completely different from both parents? Or would you trust your wife without asking questions? 👀
