As part of our ongoing effort to map community-led innovations that can enhance resilient construction in Lagos State, Thrivescape Initiative convened a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with key stakeholders.

The session brought together community leaders, NGOs, CBOs, religious leaders, and artisans to explore their perspectives on resilient construction and the critical role communities play in preventing building collapse.

Participants also shared practical models and successful community-driven approaches that could be adapted locally to strengthen construction safety and promote resilient communities across Lagos State.

This discussion builds on our earlier phases of the research, including a survey of over 450 respondents across Lagos State and a series of Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). Together, these engagements are generating evidence to support sustainable, community-driven solutions for safer construction practices.

Thrivescape is excited to announce that we have received support from Lloyd's Register Foundation to implement a project on Citizen Led Innovation for Resilient Construction in Lagos State.

The project seeks to generate evidence-based insights on citizen led innovations that can contribute to reducing cases of building collapse across Nigeria, an issue that continues to raise significant concerns around safety, accountability, and resilience within the built environment.

Through this project, we will engage communities and stakeholders to generate evidence, identify innovative practices, and promote approaches that can help improve safety, resilience, and sustainability in construction and urban development.

Lloyd's Register Foundation is an independent global charity that supports research, innovation, and education to make the world a safer place. Its mission is to use the best evidence and insight to help the global community focus on tackling the world’s most pressing safety and risk challenges. For many Lapo babies, this looks familiar—grandfather’s home, uncle’s house, daddy’s inherited property in the village, and more.

These structures reflect rich cultural heritage, but they are vulnerable to collapse, especially under extreme weather caused by climate change.

Their fragility underscores the rising statistics of building collapses and the urgent need to integrate modern structural reinforcements.

While vernacular architecture offers diversity, identity, and a deep sense of belonging, it is important to renovate and adapt these homes to ensure they remain strong, resilient, and sustainable for generations to come.

Last week, Thrivescape Initiative participated in the 2026 retreat of the Action Group on Free Civic Space (AGFCS) held in Abuja.

The retreat provided a valuable opportunity to engage with more than 40 civil society organizations, civic actors, activists, and journalists to reflect on the coalition’s collective efforts in 2025. It also created space to identify opportunities to disrupt, reform, and transform the current security architecture in ways that advance and protect civic space in Nigeria.

As a new NGO member of the coalition, the retreat broadened our understanding of the different dimensions of civic space shrinkage and strengthened our appreciation of the strategic actions required to safeguard civic freedoms.

It also provided insight into the various ways we can contribute meaningfully to expanding civic rights and promoting an enabling environment for all civic actors. A special appreciation to Adekanye Boluwatife for proudly representing Thrivescape Initiative and contributing to conversations on strengthening civic space in Nigeria.

A big shout out to Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri for her leadership

About 70 percent of the population lives in informal settlements (Amnesty International 2017)

Access to adequate housing is a right.

Government has a responsibility to do everything necessary to guarantee it.

In Lagos, the housing challenge is real. For many families, housing is not a choice. It is a daily struggle.

Urban policy must respond to this reality.

Demolition should not replace housing solutions.

Cities must prioritize affordable housing, inclusive planning, and protection of vulnerable communities.

Because decent housing is not a privilege, it is a right.

Know Your Rights!!!

Demolition without proper notice, zero consultation, zero regard for court injuncton, no alternative shelter is a blantant violation of human rights.

These are not just planning issues.
They are human rights issues.

At Thrivescape, we are organizing a sensitization session on demolition and human rights to equip communities with the knowledge to prevent demolition and protect their rights.
