🌿 ECHOES OF THE EARTH
An Original Fictional Story by Ify
EPISODE 17 — THE PORTION OF DEATH
“The heart can forgive what the mind understands, but sometimes it cannot survive what the heart remembers.”
The hunter had barely eaten for days.
He remained hidden in the forest, waiting.
Waiting for Chimmaramma.
Every morning, he told himself she would come.
Every evening, he told himself perhaps she had been prevented from leaving.
But as the days passed, the truth became harder to escape.
Odibeze was dead.
The entire kingdom was mourning.
The palace drums that once announced royal celebrations were silent.
Women gathered in mourning.
The King had withdrawn from public appearances.
And the hunter's guilt grew heavier with every passing day.
He had wanted his daughter back.
He had wanted to take her away from the palace.
He had wanted to prove that he was her father.
But now one innocent girl was dead.
And the daughter he had fought so hard to reclaim had disappeared from him.
THE VISITOR
One evening, the hunter heard footsteps.
He immediately reached for his knife.
Then he saw her.
Chimmaramma.
She stood several feet away.
In her hands was a wooden plate.
On it were pieces of roasted corn.
Beside the corn was a small calabash of palm wine.
The hunter stared at her.
"Chimmaramma..."
She said nothing.
She walked toward him and placed the food beside the fire.
"You haven't been eating."
The hunter looked away.
"I couldn't."
"You have to."
He looked at her.
"Why did you come?"
Chimmaramma sat opposite him.
"Because I need to talk to you."
The hunter swallowed.
"Will you forgive me?"
She looked at him for a long time.
"I don't know."
He lowered his head.
"I never wanted Odibeze to die."
"I know."
"I only wanted you."
"I know."
"I thought if you came with me, everything would be different."
Chimmaramma's eyes filled with tears.
"You should have trusted me with the truth."
The hunter looked at her.
"What?"
"You should have told me everything."
She stared into the fire.
"Instead, you gave me lies."
"I was afraid."
"And because I believed you..."
Her voice broke.
"...my sister died."
The hunter began crying.
"Please."
He reached toward her.
"Come with me."
Chimmaramma looked at him.
"I will."
His face changed.
"You will?"
She nodded.
"I cannot remain in the palace."
"Why?"
"Because everything there reminds me of her."
She wiped her tears.
"Her room."
"Her clothes."
"The places we played."
"The gardens."
"The food we used to steal."
She looked at the roasted corn between them.
"Even this."
The hunter stared at the food.
"You still remember."
"I remember everything."
She picked up the calabash.
"And I brought this because I want us to eat together."
The hunter hesitated.
"You are really coming with me?"
"Yes."
She smiled faintly.
"Eat."
He looked at her suspiciously.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I'm afraid."
"Of me?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"I'm afraid that if I eat, you will change your mind."
Chimmaramma forced a smile.
"I won't."
She handed him the food.
"Eat."
The hunter slowly began eating.
Chimmaramma watched him.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
The hunter took a drink.
Then another.
"I have missed you," he whispered.
Chimmaramma looked down.
"I have missed having a father."
He reached for her hand.
"I'm sorry."
She squeezed his fingers.
"I know."
For a few moments, there was silence.
Then the hunter's movements slowed.
He blinked.
"Chimmaramma..."
"Hmm?"
"I'm suddenly..."
He rubbed his eyes.
"...very tired."
She looked at him.
"I know."
He tried to stand.
But his legs weakened.
He stumbled back down.
"What's happening?"
Chimmaramma's tears began falling.
She moved closer.
"It was you who gave me this portion."
The hunter stared at her.
"What?"
"The same portion you told me would only make my sister sleep."
His eyes widened.
"No..."
"It took her life."
"Chimmaramma..."
"And now..."
She swallowed.
"...the same portion you gave me will take yours."
The hunter stared at her in horror.
"No."
He tried to reach for her.
"Please."
She held his hand.
"And by this same portion..."
Her voice broke.
"...I will go in search of my sister."
The hunter's eyes filled with tears.
"Don't do this."
"I wish I could hate you."
She cried.
"I truly wish I could."
She pressed his hand against her cheek.
"But I couldn't."
The hunter struggled to breathe.
"Then don't leave me."
Chimmaramma closed her eyes.
"I can't let you live while my sister is dead."
She opened them again.
"I wish you had trusted me with the truth instead."
The hunter stared at his daughter.
"I'm sorry."
Those were his final words.
His hand went limp.
Chimmaramma sat beside him, crying.
For a long time, she did not move.
Then she whispered:
"Goodbye, Father."
THE LAST VISIT
Chimmaramma returned to the palace one final time.
She did not go to her room.
She did not go to the Queen.
She went straight to Odibeze's grave.
She carried the same things the sisters had shared on their final night.
Roasted corn.
Palm wine.
She sat beside the grave.
"Odibeze Nwannem..."
She placed the corn beside her.
"I brought our food."
Her voice trembled.
"Do you remember?"
"We used to steal our father's palm wine."
A weak smile appeared on her face.
"And then we would blame each other when we were caught."
She laughed through her tears.
"Those were the happiest days of my life."
She looked toward the sky.
"I have avenged you."
The smile disappeared.
"But revenge doesn't make me happy."
She touched the earth above the grave.
"I wish I could bring you back."
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
Chimmaramma looked up.
The sky had suddenly darkened.
The first drops of rain began to fall.
She stared at the storm.
It was the same kind of night on which the two girls had entered the world.
The sky seemed to remember.
She opened the calabash.
"I am coming to find you."
She whispered.
"This time, nothing will separate us."
Another thunderclap shook the earth.
Chimmaramma closed her eyes.
"Nwannem..."
"I will find you."

🌿 EPISODE 16 — THE PRICE OF A LIE
“A lie may begin as a whisper, but when it destroys an innocent heart, its echo can last beyond death.”
The kingdom mourned.
The drums of celebration were silenced.
The palace gates remained closed.
Women dressed in black.
The royal household was drowning in grief.
But somewhere beyond the palace walls, another man was waiting.
The hunter.
He had expected Chimmaramma to meet him before dawn.
She never came.
At first, he thought she had been caught.
Then he thought perhaps she had changed her mind.
But as the sun rose, a terrible feeling entered his heart.
Something had gone wrong.
By afternoon, he saw a group of men moving through the forest.
He hid behind a tree.
He heard them speaking.
"The Princess is dead."
The hunter froze.
"What?"
He leaned closer.
"The King's daughter. Odibeze."
The blood drained from his face.
He knew immediately.
The portion.
His eyes widened.
"No..."
He had told Chimmaramma it would make her sister sleep.
He had never intended for Odibeze to die.
At least...
That was what he told himself.
But deep inside, he knew the truth.
He had been so desperate to get his daughter back that he had crossed a line he could never uncross.
He turned toward the palace.
"Chimmaramma..."
That night, the hunter returned.
But he did not sneak into the palace.
He waited outside the walls.
He knew he was no longer coming for his daughter.
He was coming to face what he had done.
Then Chimmaramma appeared.
She stood beneath a tree.
Her face was swollen from crying.
The hunter stepped forward.
"Chimmaramma."
She looked at him.
There was no warmth in her eyes.
Only pain.
"You lied to me."
The hunter stopped.
"What?"
"You told me the portion would make my sister sleep."
He swallowed.
"It was supposed to."
"She died."
Silence.
"I killed her."
The hunter shook his head.
"No. I never wanted that."
"But you gave it to me!"
"I wanted you to leave with me."
"You knew I couldn't leave while Odibeze was awake."
He lowered his eyes.
"I was desperate."
Chimmaramma laughed bitterly.
"Desperate?"
She stepped toward him.
"You made me believe my sister hated me."
"I never wanted you to hate her."
"You told me she knew about my mother."
"I..."
"You told me she was jealous."
The hunter said nothing.
"You told me she wanted my Betrothed."
His face fell.
"And you told me she wanted to turn me into her servant."
The hunter's silence was answer enough.
Chimmaramma stared at him.
"You lied."
"I wanted you to trust me."
"You destroyed the only person who truly loved me."
The hunter's eyes filled with tears.
"I am your father."
Chimmaramma shook her head.
"No."
He stared at her.
"You are the man who taught me that blood does not always make someone family."
She stepped closer.
"My sister loved me when she had every reason to fear losing everything because of me."
"You..."
"You knew she was innocent."
The hunter looked away.
Chimmaramma's voice became cold.
"And still you used me."
The hunter began to cry.
"I only wanted my daughter."
"You had a daughter."
She pointed toward the palace.
"She is dead because you wanted to possess me."
The hunter collapsed to his knees.
"Forgive me."
Chimmaramma looked at him.
"I cannot."
She turned away.
Then stopped.
"Father..."
He looked up.
"I will never forgive what you did."
She paused.
"But I will not let hatred make me like you."
She walked away.
The hunter remained on his knees.
THE FINAL CHOICE
Days passed.
Chimmaramma barely ate.
She barely spoke.
She visited Odibeze's resting place every morning.
One evening, she sat there until sunset.
"Nwannem..."
She placed flowers beside the grave.
"I promised you I would find you."
She closed her eyes.
"I don't know where you will go after this life."
"But I will find you."
A breeze moved through the trees.
Chimmaramma smiled sadly.
"And when I find you..."
She whispered:
"I will spend the rest of my life protecting you."
She stood.
But before she left, she remembered the hunter.
The man who had destroyed her life.
The man who had lied to her.
The man who had made her kill her sister.
She knew she could never remain in the palace.
She could never live with the memory of Odibeze's death.
And she could not allow the hunter to continue living freely after what he had done.
She made a decision.
A terrible one.
She would end the story herself.
But before she did...
She had one last thing to say.
Standing before Odibeze's grave, she whispered:
"Wait for me, Nwannem."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I will come."
And somewhere beyond the palace walls, the hunter was waiting for her.
Neither of them knew that before the next sunrise...
their lives would come to an end.
And when they did...
a promise made beside a grave would begin a journey that would cross centuries.
A journey that would bring two soul sisters together again.
But this time...
the one who once took a life would be given a chance to save one.

EPISODE 15 — THE SISTER SHE COULD NOT SAVE
“The worst kind of betrayal is the one committed by a heart that never meant to betray.”
The scream tore through the palace.
"Nwannem!"
Chimmaramma held Odibeze against her chest.
Her hands trembled violently.
"Please wake up!"
But Odibeze did not move.
The wine cup lay with the drink spilt on the floor.
The roasted corn had been forgotten.
And the sweet laughter that had filled the room only moments earlier had been replaced by a terrible silence.
Chimmaramma shook her sister again.
"Nwannem!"
Nothing.
"No..."
She pressed her ear against Odibeze's chest.
Nothing.
"No, no, no..."
Her voice broke.
"I didn't mean to do this."
She looked at the empty packet lying beside them.
"He said you would only sleep."
She began sobbing.
"He said you would wake up!"
She pulled Odibeze closer.
"I only wanted to leave."
"I only wanted to know my father."
"I only wanted to know who my mother was."
Her voice became a whisper.
"Why did I believe him?"
Footsteps thundered outside.
Someone shouted.
"What happened?"
Chimmaramma froze.
The door burst open.
Servants rushed in.
Then guards.
Then members of the royal household.
And finally—
the King.
The moment he saw Odibeze lying motionless in Chimmaramma's arms, his face changed.
"Odibeze!"
He rushed forward.
Chimmaramma backed away.
"Father..."
The King knelt beside his daughter.
He touched her face.
Cold.
His breath caught.
"No..."
He looked at Chimmaramma.
"What happened?"
Chimmaramma could barely speak.
"I..."
She looked at Odibeze.
"I gave her something."
The King stared at her.
"What?"
"I thought it would make her sleep."
The King's face hardened.
"Who gave you that?"
Chimmaramma's lips trembled.
"A hunter."
The room went silent.
The King closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like a broken man.
Then he looked at his daughter.
His precious Odibeze.
The child who had carried a secret for years.
The child who had protected the sister she knew was never her sister.
And now she was gone.
Chimmaramma suddenly remembered Odibeze's final words.
I am not angry.
You are my one and only sister.
In another life, I will find you.
Her knees gave way.
She fell beside the body.
"Nwannem..."
She held her hand.
"I believe you now."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I believe you."
"You weren't jealous."
"You weren't trying to take anything from me."
"You were protecting me."
She looked toward the King.
"Father..."
The King said nothing.
Chimmaramma's voice became desperate.
"Tell me!"
"What was she protecting me from?"
The King stared at her.
He could no longer hide the truth.
Not after Odibeze had died carrying it.
"You."
Chimmaramma froze.
"Me?"
The King nodded slowly.
"She was protecting you."
"From what?"
The King closed his eyes.
"From the truth about your birth."
Chimmaramma stopped breathing.
And then the King told her everything.
The secret birth.
Her mother's forbidden love.
The secret hut.
Her mother's death.
The midwife.
The deception.
The Queen's supposed twins.
And finally—
the truth that Odibeze had discovered everything.
Chimmaramma listened in absolute silence.
When the King finished, she looked at Odibeze.
Her sister.
Her best friend.
The person she had just killed.
And suddenly every strange look she had ever seen on Odibeze's face made sense.
Every warning.
Every attempt to stay close.
Every time Odibeze had stopped her from leaving.
Every time she had said:
"Nwannem, I am only trying to protect you."
Chimmaramma covered her mouth.
A terrible realization settled inside her.
The hunter had taken the truth and turned it into a weapon.
Later that night, Chimmaramma sat beside Odibeze's body.
Nobody could convince her to leave.
She gently stroked her sister's hair.
"I'm sorry."
Her voice was barely audible.
"I was angry with you because I thought you wanted to destroy me."
She laughed bitterly through her tears.
"But you were trying to save me."
She bent down and kissed her forehead.
"You were always braver than me."
Silence.
"I promised I would come back to you."
She wiped her tears.
"I meant it."
Then she whispered:
"If death separates us..."
Her voice broke.
"...then I will find you there."
She looked at Odibeze's peaceful face.
"I swear."

ECHOES OF THE EARTH
A tale of love, betrayal, sacrifice and a promise that death could not erase.
EPISODE 14 — THE LAST NIGHT TOGETHER
“Sometimes the last ordinary moment of your life is the one you will spend the rest of eternity wishing you could return to.”
Night had fallen over the kingdom.
The palace that was usually filled with voices had gradually become quiet.
One by one, the lamps along the corridors were extinguished.
The guards took their positions.
The servants retired to their quarters.
And eventually, even the royal household surrendered to sleep.
But someone was still awake.
Hidden in the darkest corner of an unused passageway was the hunter.
He had entered the palace hours earlier.
He had been hiding there, motionless, waiting.
He knew the palace guards changed shifts at certain hours.
He knew which corridors were usually deserted.
He knew that if he moved too early, he would be discovered.
So he waited.
And waited.
His only thought was Chimmaramma.
He had not come to hurt anyone.
He had not come to fight the King.
He had come for his daughter.
Tonight, he intended to take her away.
Meanwhile...
Chimmaramma sat alone in her room.
She had already made up her mind.
She would leave the palace.
She would go with the hunter.
She would finally see the world beyond the palace walls.
She would finally know the father she had only recently discovered.
She would finally learn about the mother she had never known.
But there was one thing she could not silence.
Odibeze.
No matter how many lies the hunter had told her...
No matter how suspicious she had become...
No matter how much anger she carried...
She still loved her sister.
She could not leave without saying goodbye.
And she didn't want their last memory of each other to be an argument.
Chimmaramma looked toward the door.
"I will spend one more evening with her."
She smiled faintly.
"Just like old times."
She quietly slipped out of the room.
The palace kitchen was almost empty.
She knew exactly what she wanted.
A little palm wine from the King's store.
She had stolen small amounts from there many times when she and Odibeze were younger.
They would sneak away with roasted corn, sit somewhere they thought nobody could find them, and laugh until someone came looking for them.
Tonight, she wanted one final memory.
She carefully took a small calabash of the King's palm wine.
Then she went to where some servants had roasted corn earlier that evening and picked two pieces.
She smiled to herself.
"Nwannem will be happy."
She turned toward their room.
And stopped.
Someone was standing in the darkness.
Chimmaramma's heart jumped.
She nearly dropped the corn.
The figure stepped forward.
She stared.
"Father?"
The hunter looked at her.
"Chimmaramma."
She quickly looked behind her.
"How did you get into the palace?"
"I have been waiting for you."
"You shouldn't be here."
"I know."
She lowered her voice.
"If the guards find you..."
"They won't."
He stepped closer.
"I came because we must leave tonight."
Chimmaramma stared at him.
"Tonight?"
"The King's men are still searching for me."
He glanced toward the corridor.
"And your sister has made it almost impossible for me to get near you."
Chimmaramma lowered her eyes.
"She is only protecting me."
The hunter's expression tightened.
"From me."
Chimmaramma said nothing.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then the hunter looked at the food in her hands.
"What are you carrying?"
Chimmaramma smiled faintly.
"Roasted corn."
"And the calabash?"
"Palm wine."
He smiled.
"You are still the little girl who used to steal from the King's store."
Chimmaramma laughed softly.
"I used to steal it with Odibeze."
The hunter's smile disappeared.
"Then say goodbye to her."
Chimmaramma looked at him.
"I want to."
"Good."
"I want one last evening with her."
The hunter hesitated.
"Chimmaramma..."
"Please."
She looked at him with pleading eyes.
"I have made my decision. I will leave with you."
The hunter studied her.
"And you will come?"
"Yes."
"Tonight?"
She nodded.
"But first, let me spend some time with my sister."
The hunter finally agreed.
"Do not tell her you are leaving."
"I won't."
"I will wait for you."
"Where?"
"Beyond the eastern gate."
He looked into her eyes.
"Come before dawn."
Chimmaramma nodded.
The hunter disappeared back into the shadows.
Chimmaramma stood there for a moment.
She looked down at the roasted corn.
Then at the calabash of palm wine.
A sad smile crossed her face.
"One last night, Nwannem."
THE TWO SISTERS
Odibeze was sitting beside the window when Chimmaramma entered.
She looked up.
"Nwannem!"
Chimmaramma smiled.
"I brought something."
Odibeze's eyes brightened.
"What?"
Chimmaramma lifted the roasted corn.
"Your favourite."
Odibeze laughed.
"You stole from the kitchen again?"
"Maybe."
"And that?"
She pointed at the calabash.
Chimmaramma grinned.
"Something even better."
Odibeze laughed.
"You're going to get us both into trouble."
"Then we will get into trouble together."
For the first time in weeks, Odibeze felt her heart become light.
They sat together.
They ate the roasted corn.
They shared the palm wine.
They laughed about their childhood.
They talked about foolish things.
They remembered the days when they would sneak out of the palace and pretend to be ordinary girls.
For a little while...
There was no secret.
No hunter.
No suspicion.
No betrayal.
Just two sisters.
Odibeze looked at Chimmaramma.
"I have missed you."
Chimmaramma's smile faded slightly.
"I have missed you too."
"Then why have you been so distant?"
Chimmaramma lowered her eyes.
"I don't know."
Odibeze reached for her hand.
"Nwannem..."
Chimmaramma looked at her.
"I love you."
Odibeze smiled.
"I love you too."
Chimmaramma swallowed.
"Even if I leave?"
Odibeze's smile disappeared.
"Leave?"
Chimmaramma quickly laughed.
"I mean... one day, when we get married."
Odibeze relaxed.
"When that day comes, I will still find you."
Chimmaramma looked at her.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Chimmaramma's eyes filled with tears.
She looked away quickly.
Odibeze noticed.
"Why are you crying?"
"I'm not."
"You are."
Chimmaramma wiped her face.
"Maybe I'm just tired."
Odibeze leaned against her shoulder.
"Whatever happens, you will always be my sister."
Chimmaramma closed her eyes.
Those words pierced her heart.
Because she knew she was about to leave.
And she knew she might never see Odibeze again.
Chimmaramma quietly prepared the drink.
Her hands trembled.
She remembered the hunter's instructions.
It will only make her sleep.
She desperately wanted to believe him.
She poured the mysterious portion into the drink, uncertain of what amount would be enough.
She had no idea that the entire portion was far more dangerous than she had been led to believe.
She handed the drink to Odibeze.
"Here."
Odibeze accepted it without suspicion.
"To us?"
Chimmaramma smiled through tears.
"To us."
They drank.
They continued talking.
Odibeze suddenly yawned.
Chimmaramma looked at her.
"Are you tired?"
"A little."
Odibeze smiled.
"I don't know why."
Another yawn.
Her eyes began to droop.
Chimmaramma's heart began racing.
She thought the portion was finally taking effect.
She stood.
"Nwannem..."
Odibeze looked at her sleepily.
"Hmm?"
"When we turn eighteen..."
Odibeze smiled.
"Yes?"
"I will come and see you."
"After our weddings?"
"Yes."
"We will both be married by then."
Chimmaramma nodded.
"Promise me you won't forget me."
Odibeze smiled.
"Never."
Then suddenly—
Her body je**ed violently.
Chimmaramma froze.
"Nwannem?"
Odibeze's body convulsed again.
"What is happening?"
Chimmaramma rushed toward her.
Foam began appearing at the corner of Odibeze's mouth.
"No..."
The calabash slipped from Chimmaramma's hands and crashed onto the floor.
"No!"
She grabbed Odibeze.
"Nwannem!"
Odibeze struggled to breathe.
Chimmaramma began screaming.
"Father said you would sleep!"
"I didn't know!"
"I didn't know!"
She held her sister tightly.
"I'm sorry!"
"I'm sorry, Nwannem!"
"I didn't want to hurt you!"
"Please don't die!"
Odibeze's eyes struggled to focus.
She looked at Chimmaramma.
And despite everything...
There was no hatred in them.
Only love.
Chimmaramma was sobbing uncontrollably.
"Please!"
"Don't leave me!"
"I swear I didn't mean to kill you!"
Odibeze struggled to speak.
"Don't..."
Chimmaramma bent closer.
"Don't what?"
"Don't cry."
"I'm sorry!"
Odibeze weakly squeezed her hand.
"I'm not angry."
Chimmaramma shook her head.
"You should hate me."
"No."
"You should hate me!"
Odibeze's voice was barely audible.
"You are..."
She struggled for breath.
"...my one and only sister."
Chimmaramma broke down.
"I love you!"
Odibeze looked into her eyes.
"I will always love you."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Then she whispered:
"In another life..."
Chimmaramma leaned closer.
"I will find you."
"Even if..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...we are born far apart."
Chimmaramma sobbed.
"I'll find you too."
Odibeze smiled faintly.
"We are soul sisters..."
