Years later, the lesson remains.

Africa cannot afford to have the fate of its nations decided by foreign powers, no matter how noble the intervention may sound at the beginning.

Libya reminds us that removing a government is one thing. Building a stable nation afterward is another.

When foreign powers intervene in Africa, Africans must ask: Who controls the future after the intervention? Who protects the people when the foreign soldiers leave? And who pays the price when the plan fails?

Pan-Africanism is not simply about loving Africa.

It is about believing that Africans must have the knowledge, unity, institutions and power to determine the future of Africa.

Africa must learn from Libya.
Africa must learn from history.
Africa must learn to determine her own destiny.

There was a time when Nigeria had enough financial strength to lend $360 million to the IMF and World Bank.

Today, the same country is heavily dependent on borrowing from international financial institutions.

This raises a bigger question for Africa: How did we move from lenders to borrowers, and what will it take to reverse the story?

History has lessons. We must learn them.
