To play the piano with expression means to play in a way that communicates feeling, emotion, character, and musical intention, rather than simply pressing the correct notes and rhythms.

A pianist can play every note correctly and still sound mechanical. Expression is what makes the music feel alive.

🎹 What does expressive piano playing involve?

1. Dynamics — playing with different levels of volume

You don't play every note at the same volume.

You may play softly when the music is intimate and gradually become louder when the music builds.

For example:

Soft → louder → loud → soft

This creates emotion and movement.

2. Timing and phrasing

Expressive playing isn't always perfectly mechanical.

You learn how to shape a musical phrase—knowing where to begin, where to build tension, and where to relax.

Think of a musical phrase like speaking a sentence. You don't give every word the same emphasis.

3. Articulation

How you touch the keys matters.

You can play notes:

Smoothly (legato)
Separately (staccato)
Strongly
Gently
With emphasis

The same melody can communicate something completely different depending on how you articulate it.

4. Your touch

Two pianists can play exactly the same chord, but they may produce completely different sounds.

Why?

Because of touch.

Before playing, ask yourself:

What is this music trying to communicate?

Is it joyful?
Worshipful?

Peaceful?

“What should I play?”

“How should I play it?”

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY INSTRUMENT WHEN I WAS AWAY FOR TWO WEEKS?

I came back after being away for just two weeks, and something caught my attention.

I checked my guitar and discovered that the fretboard had developed some stains and dirt. 😩🎸

The funny thing is that the guitar was not left outside. It was properly kept inside its bag.

So I asked myself:

“How did it get like this?”

The answer was simple: I wasn't around to touch or maintain it.

For two weeks, the guitar was just sitting there.

This experience reminded me of something important—not just about caring for an instrument, but about maintaining our skills as musicians.

🎹🎸 Don't abandon your instrument.

Your instrument needs attention.

Play it.
Touch it.
Practice with it.
Clean it.
Inspect it.
Take care of it.

Even when you don't have much time, spend a few minutes with it.

Why?

Because an instrument that is constantly used becomes familiar to you. Your fingers become more comfortable. Your ears become more sensitive. Your technique develops. Your relationship with the instrument becomes stronger.

But when you abandon your instrument for a long period, you may return and realize that both the instrument and your skills need attention again.

And this applies beyond the physical condition of the instrument.

Your musical ability also needs maintenance.

If you stop playing for weeks or months, you may notice that things that were once easy suddenly feel difficult.

That chord progression you could play effortlessly may now require more concentration.

That scale you used to play smoothly may feel rusty.

That creativity you had may need to be awakened again.

🎶 Consistency matters.

You don't always need to practice for hours.

Even 15–30 minutes of intentional practice can make a difference.

So, don't wait until you have plenty of time before you touch your instrument.

If you have five minutes, play.

If you have fifteen minutes, practice.

If you have an hour, go deeper.

Just don't abandon your instrument.

Your instrument is not just an object you own.

It is a tool through which you express your gift, creativity, emotions, and musical identity.

Take care of it, play it regularly, and keep your relationship with it alive.
