Elena stared at Adrian.

"An experiment?"

"Yes."

"What exactly am I supposed to be experimenting with?"

Adrian returned to his desk and sat down.

"Me."

Elena's eyebrows rose.

"I'm sorry?"

"You heard me."

He opened the folder in front of him.

"You'll work as my personal executive assistant."

Elena swallowed.

"Why me?"

"Because you don't appear to want anything from me."

A small, confused laugh escaped her.

"Sir, I applied for a job because I need money. Of course I want something from you."

"Money is different."

His eyes met hers.

"You want a salary. I can provide that. What I'm talking about is ambition."

"I have ambition."

"I know."

Something about the way he said it made her uncomfortable.

He pushed a contract across the desk.

"Read it."

Elena picked it up.

The first page looked normal.

Salary.

Working hours.

Benefits.

Confidentiality.

Then she reached the fourth page.

Her eyes widened.

"What's this?"

"One year's employment."

"I can see that."

"No resignation within the first six months."

She looked up.

"You'll commit to six months."

"Why?"

Elena frowned.

"What if the job becomes unbearable?"

"Then you'll tell me."

She gave him a skeptical look.

Adrian's lips twitched.

"You don't believe me."

"Not completely."

That almost-smile appeared again.

Elena looked back at the contract.
