Ndokwa was not part of the plan ab initio. I have read a document where it was stated that AN was extracted from ANiocha, I from Ika and Ọ from Oshimili. Those were the component part of Asaba Division under Benin Province. As at that time Ukwuani and Ndosumili Districts made up Aboh Division under Warri Province which later metamorphosed to Delta Province.
It may interest you to know that before the creation of Delta State in 1991, Ukwuani/Ndosumili were not together with the rest Delta North politically. The other part the wanted to join the Anioma quest was Onitsha people of Anambra State.

THE ANIOMA ACRONYM: ITS FORMATION AND THE CHRONOLOGICAL INCONSISTENCY THAT DESERVES CLARIFICATION WITH NDOKWA IN FOCUS.

The modern and widely accepted account is that Chief Dennis Osadebay coined the name “Anioma” in 1951, with the acronym commonly explained as:
A=Aniocha
N=Ndokwa
I=Ika
O=Oshimili
This account has become an important part of the modern Anioma identity and political narrative.
However, a historical question arises when this claim is compared with the history of Ndokwa as a collective administrative identity for the Ndosimili and Ukwuani peoples.

The chronological question;
The history being advanced by Ndosimili and Ukwuani accounts places the deliberate discussion of a common administrative name for the two peoples at the 1976 Kwale Conference during the local government reform in Nigeria.

The conference, associated with Chief Christopher Enuewosu of Abbi and other leaders of Ukwuani district and Ndosumili district as at then, focused on the question of an appropriate administrative name to unite Ndosimili and Ukwuani tribes or people.

This raises a straightforward question:

If “Ndokwa” was the name being developed as the common administrative identity for Ndosimili and Ukwuani in 1976, how could “Ndokwa” have already represented the “N” in Osadebay's Anioma acronym in 1951?

That represents a chronological gap of about 25 years.

What needs to be clarified?

There are only a few logical possibilities:

1. Ndokwa had a completely different meaning in 1951.
If so, historical evidence should explain what “Ndokwa” meant when Osadebay allegedly used it.

2. The present explanation of the Anioma acronym was developed later.
In this case, Anioma may have existed earlier, while the explanation that N = Ndokwa was attached to it subsequently.

3. The 1951 account requires reassessment. If there is no contemporary evidence showing that “Ndokwa” represented Ndosimili and Ukwuani in 1951, then the acronym explanation cannot simply be treated as conclusive historical fact.

The real historical question

This discussion is not an attempt to deny the Anioma identity or the historical contribution of Dennis Osadebay.

The issue is simply one of chronology and true representation of Ukwuani/Ndosumili people. If Anioma was coined in 1951 and “N” meant Ndokwa, what exactly did Ndokwa mean in 1951, when the deliberate search for a common administrative name for Ndosimili and Ukwuani is associated with the 1976 Kwale Conference?

Until this is supported by contemporary documentary evidence, the popular explanation of the ANIOMA acronym deserves further historical clarification rather than unquestioned acceptance.

History should follow the evidence, and the evidence should explain the chronology.
