52 BC. Julius Caesar surrounded the most beautiful city in Gaul with the most powerful army in the ancient world. The Gauls begged their leader Vercingetorix to let them defend it. He warned them it couldn't be held. They defended it anyway.
In 25 days — Caesar's legions built a siege ramp the size of a small mountain. Right up to the city walls. Then a single Roman soldier climbed a mound of dirt to get a better angle. Others followed. Within minutes — the entire Roman army poured over the walls.
Caesar ordered two words. No mercy.
40,000 people were inside that city. Men. Women. Children. Only 800 walked out. Caesar wrote about it himself — matter of factly, clinically — the way a man writes about a thing he has decided not to feel.
