Ensuring the responsible recycling of e-waste.
Wearables, fitness bands, affordable smartwatches, wireless earbuds, are among the most frequently bought and abandoned "Fast Tech" products.
They're small and easy to forget, but they contain batteries and electronic components that shouldn't go in the regular trash.
On the upcoming International E-Waste Day, ask yourself: how many wearables are sitting unused around your home? Take them to a collection point, don't let them become "invisible" e-waste.

Fast tech: don't bin it, bring it!
Single-use vapes, power banks, fitness trackers, wireless earbuds, all these "Fast Tech" products have one thing in common: lithium-ion batteries.
When thrown into regular household trash or ordinary paper/plastic recycling, these batteries can get crushed or punctured during collection and transport, which can spark fires.
The solution is simple: batteries and the devices that contain them should never go in the regular trash. They belong at dedicated collection points, where they're handled safely.

What if your old electronics weren't the end of the story?
A device that is no longer useful to you may still have value.
It could be repaired, reused, refurbished, or recycled: keeping products and materials in use for longer and reducing unnecessary waste.
That is one of the principles behind the circular economy: making better use of the resources we already have.
Before you throw it away, ask:
Can it be given a second life?

Compliance works better when producers participate.
A strong EPR system depends on the participation of producers placing electrical and electronic equipment on the Nigerian market.
Through registration and compliance, producers become part of the system working towards responsible collection and recycling of e-waste.
Every producer that joins strengthens the collective effort to manage e-waste responsibly.
Are you a producer? Have you joined the EPRON compliance programme?

Being a producer doesn't end at the point of sale.
The journey of an electrical or electronic product continues long after it reaches the consumer.
Extended Producer Responsibility encourages producers to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their products throughout their lifecycle.
By participating in an organized EPR system, producers contribute to better collection, responsible recycling and a more circular economy.
The product may leave your warehouse, but responsibility doesn't end there.

EPR is more than a policy, it is a system that must work in practice.
For countries developing EPR systems, the real challenge lies in translating policies and guidelines into effective collection, responsible recycling and measurable environmental outcomes.
Nigeria's EPR journey continues to evolve, with stakeholders working across the e-waste value chain.
Understanding what works, what doesn't, and the challenges encountered is essential to strengthening EPR implementation.
What lessons can emerging EPR systems learn from one another?

Burning electronic waste may seem like a quick way to recover valuable materials, but it does more harm than good, it can release hazardous substances and toxic pollutants into the air.
These pollutants can affect the health of workers, nearby communities and the environment.
Responsible e-waste management means ensuring that electronic waste reaches appropriate collection and recycling channels instead of being handled through unsafe practices.
What looks like a quick solution can create a much bigger problem. Choose responsible e-waste management.

Collection is only one part of the journey.
Collected e-waste needs to move through appropriate channels where it can be sorted, processed and recycled using environmentally sound practices.
Proper recycling helps recover valuable materials while ensuring hazardous components are handled safely, and most importantly, proper documentation for recycled equipment is tracked and kept.
Collection gets e-waste moving. Responsible recycling helps close the loop.

EPRON participated in the two-day workshop held on 24–25 August 2026 in Ondo State, focused on drafting the Ondo State-level Implementation Plan and Guideline for the National Policy on Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment (OGREE) Waste Management.
The workshop was held under the UNIDO Project Component 2: “Advancing Nigeria’s Green and Just Transition to Net Zero through Circular Economy Practices.”
The session brought together key stakeholders to develop practical state-level strategies and guidelines for the effective and sustainable management of OGREE waste.
