- It was named after Alhaji Bashir Uthman Tofa, the Nigerian politician who was the National Republican Convention candidate in the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

- Its architecture features elaborate mosaics, arches and multiple minarets.

Imagine building a life where there is barely any land to build on.

That’s the story behind Ko Panyi, a Muslim fishing village in Thailand where much of the community is built over the sea. And right at the heart of it stands this mosque, which is known as Panyee Darussalam Mosque. 

Here are 3 things that make this mosque especially fascinating:

1. It serves a centuries-old Muslim community
Ko Panyi was established by Malay/Indonesian Muslim fishermen, whose descendants still call the village home today.

2. The village grew around the water
With very little land available, homes, walkways, shops and other parts of everyday life extend out over the sea on stilts.

3. The mosque rises above it all
With its white walls, golden domes, ornate details and tall minarets, the mosque creates a striking contrast against the simple homes and dramatic limestone cliffs surrounding the village.

It’s more than a beautiful mosque. It’s a glimpse into how a Muslim community built a home, a faith community and a life in a place where land was scarce.
