Your fish may know more about their tank mates than you think.

So when your fish swim together, chase each other, or seem to stick with certain companions, it isn’t necessarily random.

They’re responding to cues that help them understand who belongs in their world.

For certain species, nighttime is when they explore, search for food, interact with their surroundings, or simply become more confident.

The fish you barely notice during the day might be doing the most when you’re asleep.

So if your aquarium seems unusually quiet during the day, don’t assume nothing is happening.

Sometimes, you just need to turn off the lights and let the night shift begin.

Here’s something many fish keepers learn the hard way:

A fish asking for food doesn’t always mean it’s hungry.

Many aquarium fish are opportunistic feeders.

When food appears, they can be very eager to take advantage of it even when they’ve already eaten enough.

That’s why feeding based on how hungry your fish look can easily lead to overfeeding.

And overfeeding doesn’t just affect the fish.

Uneaten food breaks down in the aquarium, contributing to waste and potentially affecting your water quality.

Instead of feeding every time your fish rush to the surface, give them an appropriate portion and pay attention to how quickly they consume it.

Your fish may always look like they’re ready for another meal.

That doesn’t mean they need one.

Feed the fish you have, not the appetite they pretend to have.
