The title identifies the person.
But does it define the business problem the person is expected to solve?
Sometimes, business owners know they need help, but don't take the time to define what that help should actually look like.
So they create a vacancy:
Operations Manager.
But what exactly is this person coming into the business to do?
What will they be responsible for?
What will they contribute?
What results should they deliver?
A job title can mean different things across businesses. The responsibilities and expectations depend on what the business needs at that point.
Before you post that vacancy, define the need first.
Who you hire should be a response to the problem you're trying to solve, not just a title you need to fill.
What is the first thing you do when you want a new hire???
You hired someone for the job. Why are you still doing the job?
This is a frustrating position many business owners find themselves in.
You hire someone because you need help. Then months later, you're still:
• Following up on basic tasks
• Correcting work repeatedly
• Answering questions that should have been settled during onboarding
• Chasing deadlines
• Making decisions your team should be able to handle
It is easy to conclude that you simply hired the wrong person.
Sometimes, you did.
But sometimes, the bigger problem is what happened after the hiring.
Was the role clearly defined?
Did the employee understand what success looks like?
Was there proper onboarding?
Are responsibilities and decision-making clear?
Is there a system for accountability?
