Creating innovative conceptual works that explore black identity within the context of broader issues

For the past one year, I have been part of an amazing creative health and wellbeing residency called Culturally Mindful. During this program, I worked with incredible people who have become friends. We studied and worked together on new and impactful ways we can bring creative health to the public.
For my residency, I was paired with St George’s Hospital to bring creative ideas and workshops to the hospital. Because of my growing interest in conversations around sickle cell, I chose to build my project in the sickle cell ward. I thought it was perfect because my works also talk about migration, and majority of the people there are immigrants.
I had so much fun holding workshops with the patients and outpatients of the Gordon Smith Ward, and working with the nurses and staff. This later inspired a painting I did called, “Like a Bird.” You see, Cranes are migrant birds. They move in flocks because it makes them stronger. They are resilient and can survive any weather. I saw all of us like that… migrating, moving through the world together, overcoming challenges as they come.
This painting now joins the permanent collection of St George’s Hospital and will live in the Gordon Smith Ward day room, where patients and families come together. And there’s still more to come. I’m working with St George’s to build the day room into a space for more creative activity, so that when this project ends, we leave something lasting behind.

A museum built to house mastery should itself be a work of mastery.
I am a huge Frank Gehry fan. Back when I was a civil engineering student, I used to be obsessed with his buildings. They were the first things that made me question the line between structure and art. The sheer artistry and audacity of making steel and stone move like that. His design for Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a striking expression of that architectural vision and a landmark addition to Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape.
Making this sketch was my way of connecting myself to that history.

During my residency in Rome, supported by and , I collected a few pieces of the Damask fabric because I was drawn to its patterns and history.
Deep Sea is still on view as part of the Young Generation Art Award Exhibition at .gold, French Street 48, 10117 Berlin.
