GENERATOR SYNCHRONIZATION QUIZ

When two synchronous generators operate in parallel, both active power (kW) and reactive power (kVAr) must be properly controlled for stable and balanced operation.

Question:
Reactive Power Sharing:
When synchronous generators operate in parallel, reactive-power (kVAr) sharing is primarily influenced by what?

A. Governor setting
B. Fuel rack position
C. AVR / Excitation
D. Starting-air pressure

Explain the engineering principle behind your answer.

GENERATOR SYNCHRONIZATION QUIZ

Two generators are about to run in parallel. Before closing the breaker, the synchronising conditions must be correct, but there is one parameter that is particularly critical, the phase angel difference...

QUESTION
Why is the phase-angle difference between two generators running in parallel particularly important?

A. It ensures equal load sharing between the generators.

B. It prevents excessive circulating current and mechanical/electrical stress during synchronisation.

C. It increases the voltage output of both generators.

D. It improves the power factor of the generators.

Don't just drop the letter! Explain the engineering principle behind your choice.
What could happen if a generator is closed onto a live busbar with a significant phase-angle difference?

GENERATOR SYNCHRONIZATION QUIZ

Before an incoming generator is connected to a live busbar, synchronization is a critical step. Closing the breaker at the wrong instant can result in severe electrical and mechanical stresses on the generator and switchboard.

QUESTION:

Before closing the breaker of an incoming generator onto a live busbar, which condition is essential?

A. Incoming generator frequency must be zero
B. Voltage, frequency, phase sequence and phase angle must be suitably matched
C. Incoming generator voltage must always be higher than busbar voltage
D. The generator must be operating at full load

TECHNICAL QUIZ!

Fuel injection timing is one of the critical parameters affecting combustion, cylinder pressure, engine loading and overall performance.

Question:

If fuel injection timing on a large diesel engine is excessively advanced, which condition is most likely?

A. Lower peak cylinder pressure
B. Higher peak combustion pressure and increased mechanical loading
C. Complete elimination of smoke
D. Reduced combustion temperature in all conditions

MASTER ENGINEER FIX TECHNICAL QUIZ!

A rising scavenge air temperature is NOT something to ignore in the engine room.

During operation of a two-stroke marine diesel engine, a sudden increase in scavenge air receiver temperature can be an important warning of abnormal conditions developing within the scavenge space or combustion system.

CAN YOU DIAGNOSE IT?
What is the MOST LIKELY indication?

A. Excessively low cylinder compression
B. Increased jacket-water flow
C. Scavenge-space fire or abnormal combustion
D. Low turbocharger speed

👇 Drop your answer in the comments!
But don't just give the letter—explain the engineering reason behind your choice.
Challenge a fellow Marine Engineer or Engine Cadet:
Would they identify the danger before it becomes a serious engine-room incident?

MASTER ENGINEER FIX QUIZ!

Two diesel generators are operating in parallel on a ship’s electrical switchboard. The generators must share the load correctly to maintain stable and efficient operation.

Question:
Which control primarily governs active-power (kW) sharing between the machines?

A. AVR excitation

B. Governor/fuel control

C. Lubricating-oil pressure control

D. Jacket-water temperature control

Don’t just guess, think like an engineer!
Drop your answer A, B, C or D in the comments and, if possible, explain WHY.

MASTER ENGINEER FIX — MARINE ENGINEERING QUIZ!
Look closely at this reciprocating (piston) bilge pump commonly used for bilge service onboard ships.
Bilge water is rarely clean. It may contain oil, sludge, dirt, scale and small solid particles, while the pump may also need to operate reliably under changing suction conditions.

QUESTION:
Why are piston (reciprocating) pumps often selected for bilge service compared with centrifugal pumps?

A. They can handle dirty bilge water containing oil, sludge and small solids without losing prime easily.

B. They have higher efficiency than centrifugal pumps at all flow rates.

C. They produce a pulsation-free, continuous flow similar to centrifugal pumps.

D. They are less expensive to install and maintain than centrifugal pumps.

👇 WHAT'S YOUR ANSWER — A, B, C OR D?
Experienced Marine Engineers and Seafarers, don't just drop the letter!

MASTER ENGINEER FIX —MARINE ENGINEERING TECHNICAL HELP

A fellow Marine Engineer needs the experience of our community!
A Tanabe air compressor is experiencing a significant problem:

🔴 2nd-stage pressure has dropped from 24 bar to 16 bar.
🔴 Oil sump level is also dropping.
🔴 No obvious blow-by was observed, making a damaged piston ring less obvious.
🔴 When the pneumatic line from the 2nd stage to the unloader was isolated, the pressure returned to 24 bar.
🔴 The unloader and solenoid valve were both replaced, but the problem remains.

NOW, LET'S TROUBLESHOOT!
If you were the 2nd Engineer, Chief Engineer, or experienced Marine Engineer attending this defect:

👉 What would you check next?
👉 What could cause the 2nd-stage pressure to fall only when the pneumatic unloader circuit is connected?
👉 How would you investigate the simultaneous drop in oil-sump level?

Think about the complete system...

Possible areas to investigate include:

THIS IS WHERE EXPERIENCE MATTERS!
Experienced Master Engineers and Marine Engineers in our community, what is your diagnosis, and what step-by-step checks would you carry out before dismantling the compressor?

MASTER ENGINEER FIX TROUBLESHOOTING CHALLENGE!

You are on watch and your main starting-air compressors are running normally. Performance tests show that the compressors are in good working condition but the air bottles cannot reach the required cut-off pressure.
As a result, the compressors continue running continuously.

Now let's put your shipboard troubleshooting experience to the test.
As an experienced Master Engineer in the Master Engineer Fix Community, what could be the most likely cause(s) of this problem?

Think beyond the compressor itself. Consider the entire starting-air system:

👇 DROP YOUR DIAGNOSIS IN THE COMMENTS!
Don't just mention one possibility. Tell us how you would systematically troubleshoot the problem and identify the actual fault.

Experienced Chief Engineers, 2nd Engineers & Marine Engineers:
What would be the FIRST thing you would check, and why?
