The Nigerian Army has announced the unconditional release of 44 pupils and teachers who were abducted in Oyo State on May 15.

According to a statement by the Army, the victims were released by their abductors on Friday, July 10, following sustained security operations lasting more than a month.

The operation was reportedly led by the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, in collaboration with special units from the Office of the National Security Adviser, the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Defence Headquarters, and personnel from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, DSS, NIA, NSCDC, and other security agencies.

The Army said the operation focused on identifying the masterminds behind the abduction and dismantling their networks, logistics channels, informants, and hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park Forest.

Multiple arrests were reportedly made in Oyo State and other parts of the country, disrupting the group’s operations and mounting pressure that ultimately led to the unconditional release of the pupils and teachers.

The military added that some security personnel suffered casualties during the operation.

The rescued pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital and will later be handed over to the Oyo State Government to reunite with their families.
