Reflecting on Able Voice's June Quarterly Webinar: Prioritising the Mental Health and Well-Being of Children with Special Needs
On the 26th and 27th of June, the Able Voice had her second quarter Webinar provided an insightful and thought-provoking discussion on the theme, "Mental Health and Well-Being of Children with Special Needs." Delivered by Ms. Fatima Suleiman Halilu, a licensed physiotherapist, the session challenged participants to look beyond physical care and recognise mental health as an essential component of a child's overall well-being.
The presentation began by reminding participants that health is incomplete without mental health. Drawing from the World Health Organization's definition, Ms. Halilu emphasised that true health encompasses physical, mental, and social well-being. She further highlighted how emotional wellness influences children's confidence, relationships, independence, participation, and quality of life.
One of the most striking takeaways from the webinar was the reality that children with special needs are significantly more likely to experience mental health challenges than their peers, yet many of these conditions remain undiagnosed or untreated. This sobering statistic underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, early intervention, and collaborative support.
The webinar explored several factors that influence the mental health of children with special needs, including communication barriers, environmental challenges, stigma, bullying, unmet care needs, and the quality of support available to them. Participants were also equipped with practical knowledge on recognising warning signs such as persistent mood changes, withdrawal from activities, sleep and eating disturbances, irritability, anxiety, and reduced social engagement.
Beyond identifying challenges, the second day of the webinar focused on practical strategies for supporting children and their families. Ms. Halilu advocated for a holistic, child-centred, and family-centred approach to care. She encouraged parents, teachers, therapists, and caregivers to create safe and inclusive environments, communicate openly, reinforce positive behaviours, encourage play and physical activity, promote healthy relationships, and seek professional support whenever necessary.
A particularly impactful aspect of the presentation was the reminder that caregivers must also prioritise their own well-being. The powerful quote, "You cannot give what you do not have," served as a timely reminder that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Parents and caregivers were encouraged to build support systems, seek professional help when needed, celebrate small victories, and extend grace to themselves throughout their caregiving journey.
The webinar concluded with an engaging discussion session that allowed participants to reflect, ask questions, and share experiences. It reinforced the understanding that supporting the mental health of children with special needs is a shared responsibility that requires compassion, advocacy, inclusion, and sustained community effort.
As Able Voice continues to champion the rights and well-being of children with special needs, this June webinar serves as a timely reminder that every child deserves not only quality education and healthcare but also emotional support, acceptance, and opportunities to thrive. By working together as families, professionals, educators, and advocates, we can create environments where every child feels valued, understood, and empowered to reach their full potential.

What a meaningful way to begin our 5th Anniversary celebration! 💙
Today, we took our message to the streets through a community disability awareness campaign, engaging people in conversations about the true meaning of disability and the importance of inclusion.
As we moved around the community, we challenged stereotypes, answered questions, and encouraged a more understanding and inclusive society for children and persons with disabilities.
Every conversation mattered. Every smile inspired us. Every step reminded us why this mission is so important.
Thank you to everyone who welcomed us, listened, supported us, and helped make Day 1 a success.
This is just the beginning, and we're excited for all that's still to come over the next two days!
