I came across a vendor’s post today about shutting down her business because of lack of capital and a supplier who delayed her order for over a month.

Honestly, it got me thinking.

Sometimes, behind the “business is booming” posts, there is a business owner silently struggling to keep everything together.

One thing I have learnt as a business owner is that capital is important, but cash flow is everything. You can have customers, sales and even a good business idea, but if your money is constantly tied down, the business can become very difficult to sustain.

If you are a vendor, please don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Build relationships with more than one reliable supplier where possible. Always ask about delivery timelines before paying. Keep a portion of your money as emergency capital, and avoid putting every naira you have into stock.

And please, learn to communicate with your customers when things go wrong. People may understand a delay when you are honest and proactive, but silence can destroy trust.

To the vendor I saw today, I may not know the full story behind your decision, but I hope you know that closing a business does not mean you are a failure. Sometimes, you have to pause, restructure, learn and start again.

And to every business owner currently struggling with capital, slow sales, delayed suppliers, debts or the pressure to keep up appearances…

Please breathe.

Your business is not your worth.

Don’t be afraid to start small again. Don’t be ashamed to reduce your stock. Don’t be afraid to change suppliers, change strategy or even take a temporary step back.

I started my own business with just a few pieces, and today I have learnt that growth is not always about how much stock you have. Sometimes, it is about how wisely you manage what you have.

May we all build businesses that can survive the difficult seasons, not just businesses that look successful during the good ones.

Starting a business wasn’t part of the plan.

There was no carefully mapped-out journey, no perfect strategy, no guarantee that it would work. Somehow, life just led me here.

But deep down, there was always a quiet voice in me that knew the traditional 9–5 office life wasn’t for me.

And looking back now, I realize that sometimes the things we call “unplanned” are actually the beginning of something we were always meant to discover.

Entrepreneurship has stretched me in ways I never imagined. It has taught me patience, discipline, resilience, consistency and the importance of showing up even on the days when motivation is nowhere to be found.

There have been beautiful moments, difficult moments, moments of doubt and moments where I’ve had to remind myself why I started.

But every milestone reminds me that small beginnings are still beginnings.

Sometimes, you don’t need to have the whole plan.
