Soft delete or hard delete?
SOFT DELETE: the row stays, flagged.
- SET deleted_at = now() — the row never leaves the table
- Every read needs deleted_at IS NULL, and forgetting it once brings deleted rows back
- UNIQUE (email) still blocks the old row: a partial index is what frees the value
HARD DELETE: the row is gone.
- DELETE FROM orders WHERE id = $1 no flag, no filter, nothing to forget
- Child rows refuse it by default: NO ACTION until you choose ON DELETE CASCADE
- The tuple is dead before it is free space is reusable after VACUUM, not at DELETE
The difference that matters:
Soft delete keeps the row and moves the cost into every query you will ever write against that table.
Hard delete moves it into your restore plan.
If you cannot filter perfectly, do not keep the row.

If you are learning AI, do not stop at the AI model.
You also need to understand what happens around it.
• APIs allow your application to communicate with other systems.
• Databases store the information your application needs.
• Authentication controls access to your application and its data.
• Server-side logic determines what happens behind the interface.
• AI model integration connects your application to the model you want to use.
These concepts form part of the foundation behind many AI applications.
You do not need to master everything at once.
Start with the fundamentals. Understand how the pieces connect. Then build.

Your query selects only the indexed column.
Postgres reads the table anyway.
INDEX SCAN: walks the index, collects the row pointers, then fetches each matching row from the heap.
Every column you selected is available, because the whole row gets read either way.
That second trip is random I/O, once per matching row.
INDEX-ONLY SCAN: answers from the index itself.
Postgres can only pick it when every column the query names (SELECT list, WHERE, ORDER BY) is carried by the index.
Since PG 11, you can widen a B-tree for exactly this:
CREATE INDEX ON t (a) INCLUDE (b): the payload sits in the leaf without becoming part of the key.
The catch nobody mentions: the index doesn't store visibility.
An index-only scan consults the visibility map, and for any heap page not marked all-visible, it still has to go read the tuple.
That's what "Heap Fetches" counts in EXPLAIN ANALYZE.
On a table VACUUM hasn't caught up with, an index-only scan quietly degrades toward an index scan.
So: an index scan visits the heap for every matching row.
An index-only scan skips it when the index carries every column, and VACUUM has marked the pages all-visible.
