ASTAL HOSTS ST. BENEDICT SCHOOL STUDENTS ON EDUCATIONAL EXCURSION TO PROMOTE SPACE SCIENCE AWARENESS

The Advanced Space Technology Applications Laboratory (ASTAL), Uyo, welcomed staff and graduating Senior Secondary School (SS3) students of St. Benedict School, Uyo, on an educational excursion designed to deepen their understanding of space science, satellite technology, and Nigeria's space programme.

The programme, coordinated by Mr. Celestine Mhambe, commenced with the introduction of the visiting delegation led by Mr. Uwemedimo Patrick, accompanied by Mr. Imoh Ekanem and the students.

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Head of ASTAL, Dr. Esther Hanson, commended the students for their discipline and exemplary conduct and appreciated the Management of St. Benedict School for prioritizing science education through the excursion. She emphasized that early exposure to space science broadens students' perspectives and helps them appreciate the vital role of space technology in national development.

Dr. Hanson highlighted the everyday applications of satellite technology in communication, navigation, weather forecasting, agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management, and other sectors that impact daily life. She encouraged the students to participate actively and explore the exciting opportunities available in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). On behalf of the Director General/Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, she warmly welcomed the students to ASTAL.

The technical presentation, "Space Exploration and Nigeria's Space Programme," was delivered by Mr. Precious Henry Diepriye, who introduced the students to the fundamentals of space exploration, the Solar System, Earth's atmosphere, satellite technology, and the evolution of Nigeria's Space Programme. He also highlighted the critical role of satellites in communication, agriculture, environmental management, disaster response, urban planning, national security, and sustainable development.

The interactive session inspired the students to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and provided valuable insight into the limitless opportunities within Nigeria's growing space sector.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Mr. Uwemedimo Patrick, on behalf of His Lordship, Most Rev. ASTAL HOSTS FORTUNE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON EDUCATIONAL EXCURSION TO PROMOTE SPACE SCIENCE EDUCATION

The Advanced Space Technology Applications Laboratory (ASTAL), Uyo, welcomed the management, teachers, and pupils of Fortune International School, Uyo, on an educational excursion aimed at inspiring young learners and promoting interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Head of ASTAL, Dr. Esther Hanson, described the school as a valued partner in ASTAL's educational outreach programmes and emphasized the importance of exposing children to practical space science at an early age.

A presentation on "Space Exploration and the Nigerian Space Programme," delivered by Mr. Adejoh Frank, introduced the pupils to Nigeria's space programme, satellite technology, and exciting career opportunities in the space sector. Interactive demonstrations on GPS equipment and engaging discussions on rockets, satellites, astronauts, space law, and space entrepreneurship further enriched the learning experience.

To further simplify the concepts for the young audience, Dr. Millicent Okereke, Mrs. Olanike Akinola, and Mr. Magnus Nwaigwe engaged the pupils with interactive explanations, pictorial illustrations, and child-friendly demonstrations, making the learning experience both enjoyable and memorable.

The excursion also featured practical demonstrations of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and binoculars, providing the pupils with firsthand exposure to some of the tools used in space science and geospatial applications.

An engaging question-and-answer session allowed the pupils to interact with ASTAL experts on topics including rockets, satellites, astronauts, space law, space entrepreneurship, and the nature of space, further stimulating their curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM.

The excursion concluded with a vote of thanks from the school and a memorable recital on the planets by the Grade One pupils.

The Advanced Space Technology Applications Laboratory (ASTAL), Uyo, welcomed the management, teachers, and students of Pan African Comprehensive secondary schools, Uyo, on an educational excursion aimed at promoting science education, strengthening academic collaboration, and inspiring the next generation of space scientists and innovators.

Representing the Acting Head of ASTAL, Dr. Esther Hanson, Dr. Simeon Amodu reaffirmed the Laboratory's commitment to human capacity development through academic outreach, technical engagement, and collaborative learning opportunities for young people.

Speaking during the visit, the Head of Space Education and Training Department, Dr. Millicent Okereke, encouraged the students to embrace science, innovation, and research, emphasizing the critical role of space technology in national development.

A technical presentation by Engr. Precious Henry Diepiriye introduced the students to the Nigerian Space Programme and the practical applications of satellite technology, remote sensing, and geospatial data in addressing real-world challenges.

One of the highlights of the excursion was a live satellite imagery demonstration, during which students successfully identified key structures within their school campus. They also participated in practical demonstrations on the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and field observation instruments, gaining firsthand experience in geospatial data collection and validation.

ASTAL HOSTS ACADEMIC RESEARCH PRESENTATION SEMINAR TO ADVANCE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

The Advanced Space Technology Applications Laboratory (ASTAL), Uyo, hosted another Academic Research Presentation Seminar, providing a platform for staff members to present their postgraduate research findings and promote institutional learning, innovation, and knowledge sharing.

In her opening remarks, the Acting Head of ASTAL, Dr. Esther Hanson, reaffirmed Management's commitment to sustaining a vibrant research culture and encouraged staff to continue publishing quality scientific research that supports the Agency's mandate.

The seminar featured three research presentations from different disciplines.

Mr. John Anyebe presented a study titled "Accounting Information and Market Value of Listed Financial Services Companies in Nigeria," which established that accounting information, particularly dividend per share and earnings per share, significantly influences the market value of financial institutions.

Mrs. Udeme Elijah Dapo presented "Monitoring Change of Expansion in Uyo Capital City Using Geospatial Techniques," examining the spatial-temporal dynamics of urban expansion in Uyo using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study highlighted significant urban growth between 1986 and 2024 and recommended sustainable urban planning, effective land-use regulation, and environmental conservation.

Mrs. Joan Aputu presented "Agricultural Financing and Economic Growth in Nigeria (1978–2019)," demonstrating the positive contribution of agricultural financing to economic growth while recommending improved funding mechanisms, transparency, and enhanced entrepreneurial capacity.

The presentations were chaired by Dr. Ijeoma Ibeanu and Mrs. Gloria Ekanem, who commended the presenters and enriched the discussions through expert reviews, practical insights, and interactive engagement.

Speaking at the close of the seminar, the Acting Head, Dr. Esther Hanson, applauded the presenters for their academic excellence and encouraged them to publish their findings in reputable journals to further enhance ASTAL's research visibility.

The seminar was anchored by Mr. Celestine Mhambe, while the Head of Space Education and Training Department, Dr. Millicent Okereke, represented by Mr. Frank Adejoh, appreciated the presenters and encouraged staff to look forward to future editions.

Head, Dr Esther Hanson, joins the entire National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) family in celebrating two impactful years of visionary leadership by our Director General/Chief Executive, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju.

Over the past two years, NASRDA has recorded significant achievements in expanding Nigeria's space capabilities, strengthening strategic partnerships, advancing research and innovation, and deploying space-based solutions that support national development in critical sectors, including agriculture, security, environmental management, education, and youth empowerment.

At ASTAL, we are proud to contribute to this shared vision through research, capacity building, technology applications, and community engagement, in alignment with the Agency's mandate of advancing space science and technology for sustainable national development.
