The House of Representatives has passed a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police across Nigeria, with 289 lawmakers voting in support and none against.
The proposal aims to create a dual policing system made up of the Federal Police and State Police to strengthen security and improve responses to crimes such as banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
Under the bill, states can establish their own police services through laws passed by their Houses of Assembly, while the National Assembly will set operational standards. Governors will have authority over state police, subject to oversight safeguards.
However, the amendment must still be approved by the Senate, endorsed by at least two-thirds of state assemblies and signed by the President before it becomes law.

The Senate has nullified the arrest warrant issued by its Public Accounts Committee against former NNPCL Group CEO Mele Kyari over his failure to appear before lawmakers investigating an alleged N210 trillion financial discrepancy in the company’s audited accounts.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele argued that only the Senate President has the authority to approve such a warrant, prompting the Senate to overturn the committee’s decision.
The move followed a tense hearing in which former NNPCL CFO Umar Ajiya Isa denied that funds were missing and challenged claims surrounding the N210 trillion figure.
The Senate also distanced itself from Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s remarks describing the NNPCL as “a bunch of criminals and thieves,” although Oshiomhole defended his comments, saying they were made in response to allegations that senators sought job placements for their children in the company.
