ECEWS was pleased to join alumni, education leaders and distinguished guests at the 49th National Plenary in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The plenary brought together members of Nigeria’s Unity Schools alumni community to reflect on education, , unity and the role of citizens in building a stronger Nigeria.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), delivered the keynote address, while ECEWS Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andy Eyo, joined the panel discussion, bringing insights shaped by his journey as an alumnus of Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, and by his years of leadership and community-focused work.

The conversation reinforced an important message: quality education, values-driven leadership and meaningful collaboration remain essential to developing responsible citizens and advancing national development.

At ECEWS, we value opportunities to contribute to conversations that connect education, leadership, innovation and community impact.

When survivors of violence know where to turn, recovery becomes possible. This was the driving concern behind the Gender Based Violence Management Committee meeting held recently, chaired by Her Excellency, the First Lady of Ekiti State, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji.

Government institutions, response agencies, and CSOs, including ECEWS, convened to strengthen the state's violence protection response system through improved prevention, prompt reporting, effective referrals, and survivor centered service delivery.

ECEWS highlighted its support to survivors, including administering post-exposure prophylaxis ( ) to r**e survivors, covering medical costs for indigent survivors, and linking survivors to medical, psychosocial, and legal services.

Her Excellency called for intensified grassroots sensitization and stronger accountability for perpetrators, noting that interagency coordination remains key to protecting survivors, an effort ECEWS is proud to support.

ECEWS management met with the leadership of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) to explore ways to deepen collaboration and advance a more integrated, government-led approach to the state’s HIV response.

Discussions focused on strengthening government ownership, ensuring commodity security, reinforcing health systems, and improving data sharing to support better programme decision-making.

To further support this effort, ECEWS donated two all-in-one desktop computers and a touchscreen laptop to LSACA, helping strengthen access to programme dashboards and timely data for decision-making.

By working closely with government, ECEWS is supporting a more coordinated, sustainable and responsive health system for Lagos State.

The August Edition of ECEWS Rising Is Here!

In this edition, we spotlight a new HIV milestone in Akwa Ibom, exploring what the 2024 ART Survey reveals about the decline in HIV prevalence to 4.3% and what this means for the state’s HIV response.

We also look at how 1,000 pregnant women in Enugu will benefit as signs an MoU with ESAUHC to expand access to essential HIV services and improve health outcomes for mothers and infants, while the SPEED Project continues to shape a blueprint for government-led HIV sustainability in Nigeria.

And, as always, we bring you a story that captures the human heart of our mission. “UNDETECTABLE: A Story of Friendship, Motherhood, and Staying the Course” follows two young people whose friendship, forged through an ECEWS-supported OTZ programme, has helped them stay on treatment and build futures they once thought uncertain.

We are proud to celebrate another remarkable achievement at , where ECEWS emerged among the Top 10 Abstract Presenters at the conference.

Adding to this achievement, one of our abstracts, presented by Luwizatu Adamu, received the Sr Jane Frances Chioke Nursing Service Award, recognising outstanding dedication, compassionate care and contributions to improving the lives of patients and communities.

This recognition reflects the strength of our team’s research and our continued commitment to generating and sharing evidence that can inform better health programmes and improve outcomes for communities.

At , ECEWS sponsored a timely panel on a critical question for Nigeria’s health systems: How can health innovations be sustained beyond donor funding?

Opening speakers Dr. Stephen Balogun (U.S. CDC Nigeria, Branch Chief, MEDAS) and Mrs. Hyeledzira Garnvwa, representing Dr. Muntaqa Sadiq (SWAp Coordination Office, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare), also joined other panelists for a broader discussion on sustainability and health system transformation.

Dr. Balogun shared insights from the funders’ perspective, highlighting the importance of country ownership, strategic investment and strong systems in ensuring that health interventions continue to deliver impact over time.

Mrs. Garnvwa contributed perspectives on how partner-supported innovations can be integrated into national systems and aligned with government priorities.

Moderated by Dr. Oche Ekele, the conversation explored the common barriers, enabling factors and institutional conditions that determine whether innovations move beyond projects to become embedded within health systems and sustained over time.

With perspectives from across the health sector, the session highlighted the importance of institutionalisation, country ownership and collective action in advancing health system transformation in Nigeria.

The key takeaway: Sustainability requires more than funding; it depends on country ownership, institutional capacity, strategic partnerships and systems equipped to carry innovations forward.
