First reel of season 5 of Phenomenal Conversations
In this 1/2 preview of my interview with Chris Johnstone.
He traces his journey of cocreating the seminal book Active Hope with the legendary Joanna Macy.
The Evolution: 1985: Chris begins as Joanna’s apprentice—sweeping floors, cooking meals, and designing leaflets.
TheIr Question: What helps people face the horror of world crises and still find their power to act?
The Process: Regular, unhurried Skype calls with Joanna that sparked true generative conversation—where the act of dialogue surfaces insights neither person had ever voiced before.
Through a rigorous loop of transcribing, drafting, and iterative refining, those raw conversations became the foundation for Active Hope.

Just Launched today: Phenomenal Conversation #60 with Simon van der Els, PhD 'From Microbes to Metaphysics':
- Exploring whether scientific rigor and deep spirituality can coexist?
This latest episode of Phenomenal Conversations features an extraordinary dialogue with molecular biologist turned shamanic practitioner, Dr. Simon van der Els.
Simon began his career mapping the invisible world of genetics under a microscope. But when his analytical worldview fractured under the weight of global systems degradation and climate collapse, it triggered a profound personal burnout—and a radical, self-directed initiation.
Inside the Episode:
~ The Cracks in Materialism: Why reductionist science is insufficient for navigating the metacrisis.
~ Sovereign Initiation: How Simon used meditation and intense plant medicine ceremonies to forge his own path without traditional apprenticeships.
~ Whole-Making: Shifting our awareness from isolated parts (individual trees) to interconnected systems (the entire bioregion).
~The New Paradigm: How combining an artful use of science with structured spirituality is a most promising path forward.
If you are trying to bridge a sharp, analytical mind with a deep yearning for the sacred, this conversation is for you.

How might scientific rigor and deep spirituality coexist?
In this trailer preview for next week’s full Phenomenal Conversation number 60 launch, Simon van der Els, PhD maps his journey from tracking mobile genetic elements in a lactic acid bacteria during his PhD program to navigating macro climate systems and biodiversity collapse.
Faced with a world of fragmented perception, Simon did not abandon his scientific training—he uses it, to aid his story telling & guidance. Today, as a shamanic practitioner, he uses non-chemically induced states of awareness, spiced with scientific terminology to facilitate "whole-making," helping individuals restore direct nature-human communication and to perceive the broader systems they are embedded in.
The Core Proposal: Combining an artful use of science with a rigorous approach to spirituality might be a promising path forward in the current era.

When "altered states" become your everyday reality
In this trailer for my next full Phenomenal Conversation, with Dr. Simon van der Els shares a raw look at his personal initiation into the unseen.
Simon didn’t follow a traditional, textbook shamanic path. Instead, his journey was forged through a few years of frequent, micro and macro-dose plant medicine ingestion including ceremonial rites.
The result? A massive unfolding that kept unearthing deeper and deeper layers of his psyche, completely cracking open a "wild vista of heightened sensitivity."
Suddenly, the ordinary world shifted. He was experiencing incredibly vivid, strange dreams, and picking up different forms of information and intense daily intuitions that his highly trained scientific mind couldn't explain.
Simon realized he had to learn how to be with that altered information himself. He had to train his own mind to contextualize the experiences so they could actually heal him—and eventually, help him heal others.
True medicine isn’t just about having a wild experience; it’s about having the courage to navigate the strangeness and ground it into wisdom.
Watch the trailer below and tell us: how do you ground your most intense intuitive moments?

Protopia: Prototyping the Future RIGHT NO
The metacrisis can feel completely paralyzing. But what if the answer isn't a massive global blueprint, but a daily, practical approach?
In this latest preview, global futurist Pavel Luksha shares how the concept of Protopia offers us an immediate way to engage with our world's greatest challenges. It’s about creating an incremental path toward a better future, starting today.
The Protopian Approach:
👁️ Radical Presence: Protopia doesn’t look away from the crisis. It demands that we encounter our broken systems exactly where they are, facing the present moment with absolute clarity.
🔨 Active Prototyping: The future isn't something we wait for—it's something we build in real-time. Protopia invites us to actively prototype better, localized versions of the future right now.
🌱 Start with the Self: The most immediate system we have control over is our own. Pavel reminds us that prototyping a better version of the future always begins by prototyping a better version of ourselves.
We don't need to fix the entire planet tomorrow to make a difference today.

It started as a half-formed inkling.
For a long time, Natasha Lythgoe, Founder & Wilderness Guide, kept her life compartmentalized: Buddhist practice over here, wilderness guiding over there.
But there was a tension she couldn't ignore.
She noticed the outdoor community tended to overly psychologize nature, turning it into a secular self-help tool possibly to get bookings.
Meanwhile, her deep meditation practice lacked the raw edge of the living world.
Neither practice was complete without the other.
By listening to that subtle inner "itch," she birthed a compelling synthesis. She merged the profound internal discipline of Buddhist insight with the external focus of photography, creating a completely new way of perceiving what her mentor called "holy nature."
It wasn't about switching locations; it was about combining two separate lineages into a single, indivisible way of being.

I have often pondered how might we align/integrate human dreaming with that of the earths dream. Or merge meld intermingle with the dream of Gaia?
So in this first excerpt of my Phenomenal Conversation with Natasha Lythgoe, wilderness guide buddhist practitioner and founder of The Art of Rewilding, I asked her 'How we can co-dream with the Earth,' her response was very elucidating;
In a world obsessed with cognitive answers and AI-generated solutions, we have forgotten a basic physical reality: we are not just on the Earth; we are of it.
~ The Perspective Shift: Beyond Cognition: You cannot understand ecological connection through logic alone. It is a felt, somatic experience.
~ The Elements Within Us: The food we eat becomes our body. The air we breathe is the sky breathing us.
~ Flipping the Assumption: Breaking the spell of isolation—the false belief that we are the center of the universe and entirely separate from the web of life.
In wilderness guiding, there is also a practice known as "The Mirror of Nature." It is the moment we stop looking at the land, and start allowing the land to reflect who we truly are.

Is it too late for collapse avoidance?
Conventional leadership often focuses on "avoiding" disaster, but experts suggest the window for avoidance closed decades ago. According to the Limits to Growth report, the trajectory toward collapse had already began as early as December 1972.
In this second preview of Phenomenal Conversation #57, Ralph Thurm discusses a profound strategic shift: moving from the "poly-crisis" into the "meta-crisis" and embracing Collapse Resilience.
~The dialogue highlights a necessary divorce from the status quo:
~The Strategic Shift: Moving away from collaboration with corporations, governments, and co-opted NGOs.
~Ground-Up Development: Focusing on systems that already exist but have been "bulldozered over" by the current economic system.
~Sunlight as Disinfectant: Bringing hidden, resilient strategies out from "under the carpet" to face the reality of economic limits.
The conclusion is stark: the time for sticking one's head in the sand is over.
Resilience requires developing strategies from the ground up, independent of the institutions that facilitated the current crisis.
"It is too late for collapse avoidance. The focus must now shift to collapse resilience and strategy development informed by the meta-crisis."
Stop waiting for external institutions to solve the problem. Start building resilience from the ground up.

What happens when "Sustainability" isn't enough?
Expert Ralph Thurm joins the podcast to share a raw account of moving from mainstream corporate innovation to Collapse Acceptance.
The Hard Truths:
- Mainstream Failure: Decades of corporate and government work often result in "continuous denial" rather than real change.
- Beyond Depression: Admitting that previous efforts didn't have the desired effect is the first step toward a new kind of power.
- No More Hiding: Sticking one's head in the sand won't stop the unavoidable.
- The Path Forward: Ralph suggests that everyone must go through a "mourning journey" to process the starting point of collapse awareness. Only then can actions be truly informed by reality rather than false hope.
