Inside a marble workshop in Charlois, Sam Marshall Lockyer’s sculptures and paintings stood among stone slabs, dust, and industrial tools in the traffic and movement of the space itself during this year’s 𝑯𝒆𝒕 𝒁𝒖𝒊𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒕. “There was someone driving a forklift lifting slabs of stone among the sculptures and paintings. It was great to see the work in such an active space.”

Originally developed through an ongoing studio process using old shirts, rags, and cardboard tubes, the artist’s existing sculpture 𝘉𝘰𝘹 𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘱 (2026) slowly began taking on new meanings once she knew it would be exhibited in Rotterdam. “I started thinking about the port, and somehow, the sculpture that had evolved in my studio began to resemble a ship or a raft.”

During the installation, the exhibition was shaped around the location. Next to the stone slabs, “my paintings, which had seemed really huge and very impractical, suddenly had a scale relationship to the space”, the artist explained.

Moving through the festival as a visitor, Sam Marshall Lockyer reflected on the way artworks became a part of each location. When there are “so many objects, displays, and posters”, a certain “flattening of what's an artwork and what's an object” begins to happen. “I think it’s very interesting when things are recontextualized through an exhibition.”

Through 𝘏𝘡𝘔 𝘜𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘥, we continue revisiting the people and spaces that shaped the festival from within.

As someone who reads about art “nearly every day”, Derman joined 𝑯𝒆𝒕 𝒁𝒖𝒊𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒕 to experience an art festival from the inside.

As one of the volunteers behind this year’s edition, he helped with the build-up and take-down of exhibitions, welcomed visitors, and documented the festival along the way. “I take my camera nearly everywhere,” he told us. His interest in “recordings” also drew him to Sitara Abuzar Ghaznawi’s work 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩, 𝘈𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘭, 𝘔𝘢𝘺, 𝘑𝘶𝘯𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘹𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 (2025), in which the artist documented her physical and mental states throughout a period of four months. “I had never seen something like that before”, Derman said, “she was really open, I felt like she was making art out of her own life.”

Coming from Turkey, and most recently from the north side of the Maas, the Philosophy student encountered Charlois for the first time through his experience volunteering at the festival. “I didn’t know the area at all”, he explained. But getting familiar with each location was as easy as “looking for a friend’s apartment, nothing more complicated than that.”

Still, Derman guided visitors through the neighborhood, with maps in hand and a shared sense of curiosity. What stayed with him the most was the atmosphere created between everyone involved. “I learned how an art festival connects people. It functions like a magnet.”

Through 𝘏𝘡𝘔 𝘜𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘥, we continue to look beyond the exhibition itself and return to the people who were part of 𝑯𝒆𝒕 𝒁𝒖𝒊𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒕.

Some time after the festival, we returned to De Barones Se***op to talk about what stayed once 𝑯𝒆𝒕 𝒁𝒖𝒊𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒕: 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒂 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒐𝒔 ended.

“Normally, people hide that they come here,” she told us. During the festival, however, “people were just curious. They really came inside.” A real icon of Charlois, De Barones shared her enthusiasm about HZM, referring to the diversity of visitors she hosted in her store.

Besides being “good for business”, the festival presented an opportunity to observe how artists and gallerists “treated the artworks”, an interesting aspect for the owner, who confessed feeling “a lot of appreciation for art”.

Across the four days, regular customers mixed with first-time visitors, artists met with store owners, and the exhibition interacted with the space. “Art and s*x, they connect very much”, she said. “Both are emotional.” A second time participant, De Barones is already preparing her space for next year’s edition.

Through the series 𝘏𝘡𝘔 𝘜𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘥, we extend the exhibition and present the people who carried the festival and opened their spaces to 𝑯𝒆𝒕 𝒁𝒖𝒊𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒕's visitors.

Try saying of yourself “I am funny, I am caring, I am wise”. Unless it’s a disarming joke (because everyone knows you are none of these things) you can’t claim certain qualities, by yourself, for yourself. At least not credibly so. Certain qualities only reveal themselves over time, as relations between people unfold. I mean sympathetic qualities like humor, love & care, just like antipathies, annoyances & jealousies. Qualities disclosed within relations can’t be claimed as values by one party alone. They are in the air, between people, need mediation and moderation, with good timing, to be invoked, acted upon or exorcised, in ways all parties may trust.

The lecture on 22 May at 19:00 will be followed by a workshop session on 23 May at 11:00. During the workshop, the ideas presented in the talk, as well as excerpts from the manuscript of a forthcoming book will be discussed in greater depth through communal peer-review discussions.

The Architecture of Story

Rib is pleased to announce The Architecture of Story, a solo exhibition by Daniel Laufer (b. 1975, Hanover; lives in Berlin), 18 April – 7 June 2026.

The exhibition is curated by Kunsthalle Lingen and hosted by Rib, marking the first chapter of an institutional collaboration between the two organisations. Laufer's show at Rib runs simultaneously with his larger solo exhibition Time Fragments at Kunsthalle Lingen, which opens on 10 April and runs through 7 June. Together, the two presentations offer complementary perspectives on Laufer's practice across two very different spatial and institutional contexts.

The second stage of this collaboration will follow in 2027, when Rib curates a restaging of The Last Terminal: Reflections on the Coming Apocalypse at Kunsthalle Lingen, translating and extending the multi-year exhibition programme that unfolded at Rib between 2021 and 2025 across three volumes and fourteen chapters into a single group exhibition.

Daniel Laufer works across painting, film, installation, sculpture, and performance, constructing intermedial constellations from historical and contemporary filmic techniques, language, painting, and stage design. Having worked as a scenic painter before studying art, his installations carry a material specificity — props, storyboards, and built environments are not incidental to the moving image but structurally inseparable from it. His films resist the logic of seamless narration; instead, they fracture temporal continuity, exposing the gaps, cuts, and silences through which storytelling reveals its own construction.

After three days of building and a little chaos, we’re ready to welcome you across all 17 locations of the festival. Think paintings, sculptures, photography and more, in spaces you’d never expect.
