How to add value to the concrete ultrasound data (NDT) 24/09/2026

From ultrasonic scan to actionable insight straight into your reports.

This video shows how you can go from concrete NDT inspection with the Elop Insight ultrasonic scanner, collecting 3D heatmap data, to turning those findings into actionable insights. From there, results can be exported into reporting tools, integrated into CAD systems, or displayed directly in the Elop Insight Portal as part of your client deliverables.

The test block in the video isn't a random specimen. It's one of the lab-cast concrete elements as part of the EXCON Project - a Norges forskningsråd-funded R&D initiative (Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Equinor, Statens vegvesen - Norwegian Public Roads Administration, SINTEF Community and industry partners) working to extend the service life of concrete infrastructure. This block, among others, are cast with known, embedded features and defects such as voids, delamination, tendon ducts, grouting defects, and rebars, allowing that NDT methods and operators can be tested and qualified under realistic, known conditions. It's showing what a full workflow, from raw ultrasonic data to a usable engineering deliverable, actually looks like.

What we're building now is the next link in that chain: the ability to extract structured data directly out of the 3D scan models — geometry, defect location, size, depth — and push it straight into reporting. Fewer steps between inspection and decision-making, less room for error, and a digital record of the concrete's interior that can follow the asset through its lifecycle.

This is available for testing, but before we lock the workflow, we'd genuinely like your input:
🔹 Would extracting data this way from 3D scan models be useful in your reporting process?
🔹 Where would it fit best — CAD, BIM, your own reporting tools, or a portal like ours?

Drop a comment or send us a message — your feedback will shape how we build this.

🚀 Advancing Concrete Inspection Together! 🚀

Last week, our team at Elop joined forces with our sister company, Inspect Steel and Concrete, for an insightful workshop in Håverud, Sweden. 🌍✨

We explored ways to maximize the potential of the Insight scanner, integrating our 3D models to create even greater value for our customers. A key focus was the development of a rail solution for consistent measurements and improved image interpretation for the more inaccessible roof and vertical applications.

Additionally, we discussed the power of combining complementary technologies in concrete inspection—leveraging each tool’s strengths to overcome limitations. The workshop sparked valuable discussions on opportunities and challenges ahead, all set against the stunning Swedish countryside.

A big thank you to everyone involved! Looking forward to pushing the boundaries of concrete inspection technology together. 💡🔍

A convergence of tech will shape the future of infrastructure inspections 07/02/2025

The future of infrastructure inspections is being transformed by the convergence of advanced technologies, including AI-powered robots and innovative scanning solutions. Automated robotic systems are enhancing data collection and analysis, enabling more efficient and accurate assessments of structures like bridges, dams, and tunnels. These systems reduce risks and improve productivity by accessing hard-to-reach areas and performing tasks that are hazardous for human inspectors.

Complementing these advancements, the Elop Insight scanner offers a groundbreaking approach to concrete inspection. As the world's first rolling, ultrasonic scanning solution, it provides real-time 3D imaging of concrete structures, revealing internal conditions such as voids, delamination, and air pockets. With scanning speeds of up to 4 km/h, it significantly accelerates inspection processes while ensuring precision.

By integrating robotic systems with solutions like Elop Insight, professionals can achieve a comprehensive and data-driven approach to infrastructure maintenance, leading to better safety, reduced downtime, and smarter asset management.

Concrete inspection is evolving, and 3D visualization is at the forefront of this transformation. By providing a detailed, three-dimensional view of concrete structures, we can detect and analyze potential issues with unprecedented accuracy.

🔍 Why 3D Visualization Matters:
Comprehensive Analysis: Visualize the internal state of concrete structures in detail, identifying cracks, voids, delamination and other defects.

Enhanced Accuracy: Achieve higher precision in detecting and mapping structural issues, leading to more effective maintenance and repair strategies.

Proactive Maintenance: Real-time insights allow for timely interventions, preventing minor issues from becoming major problems.

Integration with Digital Twins: Our 3D models can be integrated with digital twins, providing a holistic view of the infrastructure for better decision-making and management.

Our Insight Scanner leverages advanced 3D visualization technology to provide actionable insights into the condition of concrete structures. This innovative tool ensures that infrastructure remains safe, durable, and reliable.

Concrete building projects often face issues due to improper mixing, contaminated materials, poor workmanship, inadequate curing, extreme weather conditions, soil movement, and water damage. These factors can lead to defects like cracks, spalling, and uneven surfaces. Addressing these problems requires high-quality materials, proper construction practices, and regular maintenance to ensure the longevity and safety of concrete structures. However, even when these problems arise, inspections before project handover can uncover hidden issues like cracks and air pockets that aren't visible on the surface but can compromise the integrity of structures such as bridges, tunnels, and wind turbine foundations.

Historically, inspecting the internal condition of concrete has been difficult due to the lack of effective methods. However, technological advancements are revolutionizing this process. The Elop Insight scanner, for example, provides continuous 3D images of the concrete's sub-surface condition, highlighting potential issues.

By combining ultrasonic scanning solutions with other technologies like GPR, asset owners can gain a comprehensive understanding of the concrete's integrity from the start. This proactive approach allows for better maintenance planning, extending the asset's lifespan, reducing costs, and preventing accidents. Embracing these advancements in inspection technology is a step towards more reliable and durable infrastructure.

We are delighted to announce that our Insight scanner has received unitary patent protection for Europe! This patent recognizes our innovative wheel probe solution, which features advanced transducer arrangements designed to enhance energy efficiency and signal integrity during ultrasonic inspection of inhomogeneous materials.

This achievement underscores our commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and delivering cutting-edge solutions for industry. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to innovate and lead the way in ultrasonic inspection technology.

Last week, we had the opportunity to test Insight scanner with concrete mockups at Sintef lab in Trondheim and on instrumented reinforced concrete walls at the Voll field station. These walls, treated with various binders and anti-carbonation/corrosion methods, are part of the mission towards the development of durable, low-carbon cement for sustainable concrete structures.

At Voll, temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels were continuously monitored to ensure optimal conditions for natural carbonation. This research is crucial for advancing sustainable infrastructure.

We extend our gratitude to SINTEF and our partners in Excon project for their support and collaboration.
