This is Mont Blanc. Standing at 4'807m, it is the tallest mountain in the Alps. Many rocky ridges, smaller summits, deep valleys lie in the 100km stretch that separates Mont Blanc from Mont Rose, where we are, yet it's shape is unmistakable, monstrous on the horizon.

It dominates all neighbouring peaks. However, for all it's might, it may not be the tallest summit in Europe. Because that depends on how you define Europe! The point of contention is Mount Elbrus, 5'642m, in the Caucasus mountain range at the southern edge of Russia. Geographically, Elbrus sits on the map where most people would clearly consider it to be in Europe, or at the very least, be at the edge of it. However, one can hardly claim that Russia is an European country. Hence the controversy

This is an interesting debate for those interested in the 7 Summits challenge, which consists of climbing the tallest point of every continent, and of which your one and only Next Level Pietro has completed 2 (Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua, Africa and South America). What do you think? is Elbrus or Mont Blanc the tallest point of Europe?

The sunset from Monte Rosa is stunning. We are at 3'600m of altitude in northern Italy. This is a spectacle that leaves me speechless, every time I witness it.

From West to East, the last sunrays light the mountains with a final good night kiss, before everything slowly plunges into darkness.

Very poetic, if it wasn't for the bloody cold up here! I go outside the hut just for a few minutes to take these pictures, then hastily retreat back inside. Today, minestrone and pasta with sausage are on the menu!

In the middle of the heatwave, the glacier conditions are appaling. Ancient black ice is exposed directly to the sun and is melting at a precipitous rate. As we make our way to Rifugio Mantova for some well deserved rest, sometimes we are feet deep into melt water flowing downhill.

The climate is changing. The mountains will never be the same. There has been wistleblowers, documentaries, ted talks and warnings by the thousands, yet it is still happening.

My only comfort is knowing that, even if changed, the mountains will still be there. Different, yes, but present nonetheless.

Above us, the Capanna Margherita is visible. An incredible feat of hard work and engineering, it is the tallest mountain hut in Europe at 4'550m!

After enjoying Punta Giordani summit views for a while, the descent begins. As the afternoon advances the snow becomes slushy and advancig is harder. We will sleep at rifugio Mantova, 3'600m, just a couple of hours away.

The Holy Mary marks the spot! We reached the summit of Punta Giordani 4'046m, arguably the most accessible peak on the Monte Rosa Massif. A perfect training and acclimatization before attempting the Capanna Margherita 4'550m in the coming days!

Up here, despite the sunny weather, the wind picks up a bit and there is not that much room to move around on the summit rock: we decide to remain roped up and secure ourself to the Holy Mary. Now, she truly is protecting us!

Mont Blanc comes into view, the tallest summit in the Alps. You can see it in Photo nr 2. It looks absolutely massive! It is less than 5'000m of altitude - a normal trek in Nepal may easily take you higher than that- but make no mistake: Mont Blanc is a real alpine challenge and is not to be underestimated.

Beautiful weather for climbing! Blue skies and absolutely amazing horizon from the slopes of punta Giordani. It is not every day we climb a 4'000m peak in a T-shirt, at least not in Europe!

In the distance, the rocky triangular shape of Monviso (3'841m) is visible. The sunlight is so strong that when I remove my goggles, even just to take a photo, I instantly get blinded by the snow. Suncream is a must unless you want to roast!

Because we had to take the lift, we started this climb in the early afternoon - halfway trough, I found my mind particularly fixated on the scamorza and tomato sandwitch waiting in my backpack, but I know it will taste better on the summit

In the background is our first objective: Punta Giordani (4,046 m)! I was shocked when we arrived here by lift: two years ago, the glacier looked completely different.

The second photo was taken in June 2024; despite that year seeing particularly heavy precipitation, comparing it to the glacier's current state reveals a bleak picture.

The third photo was taken from virtually the same angle. The ancient black ice—usually buried deep beneath fresher snow—is now directly exposed to sunlight and melting at an unprecedented rate. The glacier has retreated significantly, and vast stretches of rock are now visible almost all the way to the summit. We were in the midst of a European heatwave, and water was flowing down the glacier, forming actual rivers.

This is the reality for Alpine glaciers. We may well be the last generations able to admire these mountains in their traditional white mantle.

At around 3'000m, people are not the only ones here! As we gain altitude, the flora and fauna around us is transformed: the tree line is now below, while above us the glacier begins to appear.

In this middle land of rocks and grass, mountain goats thrive. However, our ascent is not yet done. The thirds and last lift of the day will bring us all the way to 3'600m, at the feet of Punta Giordani 4'046m our first target for the trip.

Quite a stark difference from Nepal, where we usally begin the trek below 2'000m of altitude!

Is Nepal safe? Here's the short answer: yes. Although the flood was devastating, it was very localized. The wave descended through one valley - the Rasuwa valley in Langtang National Park - and lost it's momentum when it reached the flatlands at the southern border of Nepal.

Langtang National Park is closed for tourism, as rescue & relief operations are on their way. However, the other National Parks of Nepal, namely the Annapurna region, Manaslu Conservation Area, Everest region, and all other major trekking locations are unaffected and safe. At least, as safe as you can ever be in the mountain.

The monsoon is not yet over in Nepal. Some damage to roads and infrastructures near the Kathmandu valley have been reported, however these are not linked with the disaster in Langtang and are caused by seasonal monsoon rain. This type of damage happens seasonally in Nepal, to some extent, and is usually fixed before the start of the Fall tourist season.

[ mountain, Himalaya, snow, trekking, nature, active, mountaineering ]
