सूर्यमतीले पाँच वर्षको लामो पर्खाइपछि पहिलो पटक सूर्योदय देखिन्। दुवै आँखामा मोतियाविन्दु भएकै कारण उनी दृष्टिविहीन जीवन बाँचिरहेकी थिइन्। उनमा रहेको अन्य स्वास्थ्य समस्याका कारण तत्काल शल्यक्रिया पनि सम्भव भइरहेको थिएन। उपचारका लागि विज्ञसम्म पुर्याउन उनको परिवारसँग आर्थिक स्रोत पनि थिएन। जब तिलगंगा आँखा अस्पतालको टोली आउटरिच माइक्रोसर्जिकल क्याम्प लिएर डिसेम्बर २०२५ मा लुम्बिनी पुग्यो तब उनको पाँच वर्षको पर्खाइले सार्थकता पायो। उनको धुमिल संसार एकाएक सग्लो भयो। सूर्यमतीका आँखाबाट खुशी छचल्किए। त्यो खुशी उनका छोरीहरू र सम्पूर्ण मेडिकल टोलीको आँखामा पनि देखियो।

For almost 25 years, Dr. Sanduk Ruit and his team from the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology have organised annual outreach microsurgical eye camps at Pullahari Monastery.
Since 2002, these corridors have welcomed thousands of patients. More than 5,200 surgeries have been performed here!
The faces of the patients may change each year. But the moment the eye patches are removed remains the same: the laughter, the smiles, the tears, and the joy of seeing light.
In many ways, these corridors have witnessed more than 5,000 moments of eye sight returning.
With gratitude to every patient, volunteer, supporter, and community member who has shared their smiles, their stories, and their trust- and to the Tilganga team whose commitment continues to make this work possible.

पनिया सदा दुई वर्षदेखि दृष्टिविहीन जीवन बिताइरहेकी थिइन्। उनमा पुन: उज्यालो देख्ने कुनै आशा नै बाँकी थिएन। तर डा. सन्दुक रुईटको नेतृत्वमा तिलगंगा आँखा प्रतिष्ठानको टोली उनको घर नजिकै आँखा शिविर लिएर पुग्यो। यो खबर सुनेपछि पनिया आफ्नो आँखा जाँच गराउन पुगिन्। उनको दुवै आँखाको शल्यक्रिया भयो। शल्यक्रियापछि पूर्णरुपमा आँखा देख्नसक्ने भएर उनी घर फर्किइन्।
उनले डा. रुईटलाई आफ्नो मनको भह यसरी सुनाइन्- 'आँखा नदेख्दा परिवारका लागि बोझ थिएँ। फेरि देख्न थालेपछि श्रीमान् र परिवारको मनबाट काँडा झिके जस्तै भएको छ ।'

About 30 years ago, Angela Griffen visited Nepal to witness Dr Ruit’s pioneering work in transforming eye care and expanding access to high-quality cataract surgery in some of the country’s most remote communities.
In early 2026, after developing cataracts herself, she made the long journey to Nepal to undergo surgery performed by Dr Ruit at the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology.
In this heartfelt article, Angela reflects on her experience of undergoing surgery with Dr Ruit and highlights his enduring impact, which continues to this day.

पाँच वर्षदेखि दृष्टिविहीन रहेकी सूर्यमती कोहरको आँखाको सफल शल्यक्रियापछि उनको जीवनमा खुसी फर्किएको छ।
आँखा देख्न थालेपछि उनले परिवारका सदस्यहरूसँग भावुक क्षण बाँडिन् र छोरीहरूलाई पुनः विद्यालय पठाउने आशा व्यक्त गरिन्।
लुम्बिनीमा आयोजित निःशुल्क आँखा शिविरमा सूर्यमतीसहित १,२५१ जनाको शल्यक्रिया गरिएको थियो।

81 year old Doda Yadav from UP, India had been living with blindness for the last 5 years due to cataract in both eyes.
Following a successful surgery by Dr. Sanduk Ruit at the annual Lumbini camp, her blindness has been cured, and she can see the world clearly after 5 years!
Her happy face says it all!
