Rock Cycle :-

Think of the rock cycle like a never-ending journey of rocks. Rocks don’t stay the same forever—they slowly change because of heat, pressure, water, wind, and other natural forces. Deep inside Earth, melted rock called magma cools down and becomes igneous rock. Over time, wind and water break rocks into small pieces called sediments, which can build up and form sedimentary rocks. When rocks are buried deep underground, heat and pressure can change them into metamorphic rocks. If they get hot enough to melt, they turn back into magma, and the whole cycle starts again.

In simple words: Rocks are constantly changing, breaking down, and forming again over millions of years.

A hot spring is a natural discharge of groundwater heated by geothermal energy from deep within the Earth’s interior that emerges at the surface. These springs form when rainwater or snowmelt seeps into the ground through cracks, faults, or porous rocks, traveling deep into the crust where it is heated by either magma chambers in volcanic regions or the natural geothermal gradient (increasing rock temperature with depth) in non-volcanic areas.

The formation process follows a specific cycle:

Infiltration: Meteoric water percolates downward through geological fractures.
Heating: Water absorbs heat from hot rocks or magma, becoming less dense and expanding.
Ascent: Buoyancy and underground pressure force the heated water back to the surface through the same pathways.
Emergence: The water exits as a thermal spring, often carrying dissolved minerals like silica, calcium, and magnesium from the surrounding rock.
In some geological settings, such as Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, this process takes thousands of years; water that fell as rain over 4,000 years ago may travel 6,000 to 8,000 feet deep before returning to the surface at temperatures around 143°F (62°C). Unlike geysers, which erupt due to pressure buildup, hot springs typically maintain a continuous, steady flow of water.

Rock Cycle: (illustrative way to explain.)

The Rock Cycle is the natural process that explains how rocks change from one type to another over time.

There are 3 main types of rocks:

1. Igneous Rock – formed from cooled lava or magma
2. Sedimentary Rock – formed from layers of sand, mud, and tiny rock pieces
3. Metamorphic Rock – formed when rocks change because of heat and pressure

Unconformities:
Source: https://www.eoas.ubc.ca/courses/eosc326/resources/Stratigraphy/unconformities-v2.htm

Unconformities represent periods of non-deposition of sediment or active erosion of strata. They help us appreciate that the geological record in any one location is NOT complete but contains gaps. Unconformities may represent important periods of activity in Earth history such as mountain building events where strata are being actively uplifted and eroded.

1. Disconformity: exists where the layers above and below an erosional boundary have the same orientation
2. Nonconformity: develops where sediments are deposited on top of an eroded surface of igneous or metamorphic rocks
3. Paraconformity: strata on either side of the unconformity are parallel, there is little apparent erosion
4. Angular unconformity: strata is deposited on tilted and eroded layers (such as at Siccar Point)
