Friday Fireplace Series: Central Otago.

This one’s a little closer to home. Viblock GM Jim’s own fireplace, built using Viblock Structural Blocks.

With Central Otago delivering some seriously cold days lately, it’s fair to say this space is earning its keep.

Te Mata House, Hawke’s Bay.

Here, concrete is doing more than defining the architecture.

Positioned to receive the lower winter sun, the home’s honed structural blocks and concrete floors absorb warmth during the day and gradually release it as temperatures fall. In summer, orientation, shading and ventilation help limit direct solar gain.

It is a considered example of thermal mass working as part of a complete passive-solar design, bringing material, comfort and landscape together.
