Since 1956, Howick Coastguard and it's predecessor, Howick Sea Rescue, have been safely getting boaties home all across the Hauraki Gulf.

Nowadays, our unit is proud to operate a modern 9.5m Naiad rescue vessel, called Howick Rescue 1.

Every volunteer plays a vital role in keeping Coastguard running, both on and off the water.

For Volunteer Week, we'd like to recognise Doug, one of the people working behind the scenes to keep our unit operating smoothly.

While Doug isn't a member of our boat crew, his contribution is just as important. From repairing doors and fixing equipment to tackling maintenance projects around the building, he's always busy ensuring our facilities are safe, functional, and ready to support our volunteers whenever they're needed.

Many of the things Doug does go unnoticed, but the impact of his work is felt every day. His dedication, practical skills, and willingness to lend a hand help keep our unit running efficiently and allow our crews to focus on what they do best—saving lives on the water.

Thank you, Doug, for everything you do. We're incredibly grateful to have you as part of the team.

Every rescue starts with a volunteer who chooses to show up.

For Volunteer Week, we're shining a spotlight on one of our most dedicated members, Ian.

Ian joined Howick Coastguard in 1999 and has progressed through the ranks to become a qualified skipper. Over the years, he has dedicated thousands of hours on the water helping keep our boating community safe.

Beyond his on water contribution, Ian has also preserved an important part of our history by authoring The History of Howick Coastguard. The book captures the story of our unit's beginnings, the evolution of our rescue vessels, memorable rescues, and many fascinating stories from throughout the years.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Ian as part of our team. His commitment, knowledge, and passion for Coastguard make a lasting difference both on and off the water.

If you'd like to purchase a copy of the book, send us a message and we'll help put you in touch.

Every rescue starts with a volunteer who chooses to show up.

National Volunteer Week is the perfect time to celebrate two of our amazing Howick Coastguard team members, Amber and Brent!

Both have worked incredibly hard to progress through the training from Recruits to Deckhands, and to fully Qualified crew members.

On top of the endless hours they spend crewing out on the water, they also dedicate their time to mentor and train our new recruits.

We are so lucky to have passionate people like Amber and Brent on our team!

If you have ever thought about volunteering with Howick Coastguard, we would love to hear from you. Send us a message to get in touch today!

• Supporting community events and fundraising

Great start to Sunday supporting the Howick Rotary Fun Walk & Run. It was awesome to see so many people of all abilities taking on the challenge. After this HW1 launched and supported the Scouts raft racing at Cockle bay and then off to a afternoon of taskings for our duty day on the water. We have an amazing group of volunteers!

If you would like to join us we would love for you to get in touch.
