Spring is now storm season too.
The old assumption was that severe weather in New Zealand belonged to winter. Recent tracking from one of the country's largest insurers found the opposite: most storms in the past year hit during spring and summer, not the colder months, and storms are arriving far more often than they used to.
None of that changes what Fire and General cover is for. It just means the timing people have in their heads for reviewing it is probably out of date.
The usual gaps show up here. A newer roof or a renovated kitchen that hasn't been reflected in the sums insured. Contents that have quietly grown in value since the policy was last touched. A boat, a trailer, anything that needs its own line.
A quick check now costs nothing and takes less time than dealing with a gap after the fact.

Public health care in New Zealand depends on your visa, not your address.
Most people holding a resident visa can use publicly funded health services. Work visa holders generally can too, but only where the visa allows them to be here for two years or more. Below that threshold, you pay for your own care.
There is a detail that catches people out. The two years runs from your first day in the country, so a visa granted overseas that did not allow for travel time can leave someone just short of the mark without anyone flagging it.
ACC sits separately again. It covers accidents for everyone here, visitors included, but not illness.
Our guide walks through where those lines sit, and what private cover is actually there to do.

Some clocks start the day you arrive in New Zealand.
Moving here comes with a list, and insurance and lending sit near the bottom of it. Visa, somewhere to live, a bank account, schools, work. That order makes sense.
The catch is that a few things start counting from day one, whether or not you have looked at them yet. KiwiSaver has a minimum contribution period before you can put it towards a first home. Lenders want to see a financial history built here, not only the one you built overseas. And medical cover is generally easier to arrange before a health condition turns up than after.
None of that is urgent in your first week. It is worth knowing in your first year.
We have put together a guide covering how ACC works, public versus private health cover, KiwiSaver, and what lenders here actually look at.

KiwiSaver and your first home in NZ — how it fits.
KiwiSaver and buying a first home in New Zealand are more connected than a lot of people realise — especially if you've arrived from overseas.
For many first-home buyers here, KiwiSaver isn't just retirement savings. After three years of contributing, most members can withdraw a large part of their balance to put towards a first home, leaving a small minimum in the account. For someone building a deposit, that can be a meaningful piece of the puzzle.
If you're new to the country, the timing rules and how it works alongside a mortgage are worth understanding early rather than discovering later. Our latest article walks through how KiwiSaver, deposits, and lending fit together — with Riaan Wilson covering the home loan side.

We found another excuse for cake…Not that we really need one!
Today marks Dean's first anniversary at DormFIN, so naturally, cake was required!
Dean is our Domestic Fire & General adviser, but around the office he’s also known for making a great cup of coffee, his commitment to keeping fit and his even slightly more impressive commitment to lollies and sushi. 😄
Happy first work anniversary, Dean! Here's to Year 2. 🥂
Now, where's the rest of that cake...?

How long would you be willing to wait?
When you're in pain or waiting on a diagnosis, time matters — and waiting lists in the public system can stretch out longer than many people expect.
Private medical insurance gives you another option: faster access to diagnostics, specialists, and surgery, so a long wait doesn't have to be the only path. For a lot of New Zealand families, that speed is the real value — getting something sorted early rather than living with it for months.
It works alongside the public system, not instead of it. And if a serious diagnosis does come up, trauma cover can provide a lump sum to take the financial pressure off while you focus on recovery — covering the life outside the hospital, not just the treatment inside it.
Worth figuring out how these fit together before you need them. Drop us a DM to chat.

Your KiwiSaver might be the biggest piece of your deposit.
If you've been in KiwiSaver for at least three years, you can usually withdraw most of your balance towards a first home — leaving a minimum of $1,000 in the account.
For a lot of first home buyers, that's the single largest part of the deposit. But the timing matters: the money goes to your solicitor, not to you, and it pays to start the paperwork weeks before settlement.
Our latest article covers how KiwiSaver fits alongside your deposit, the First Home Loan, and everything else — with the current NZ rules set out clearly. Riaan Wilson walks through it.

Cover built for how professionals actually work.
Insurance for professionals in New Zealand isn't one-size-fits-all — for some careers, it genuinely can't be.
Doctors, lawyers, dentists, accountants, engineers and other qualified professionals often need cover structured around how their income actually works. Standard policies don't always account for that. Specialist cover does.
It's available only through accredited advisers — DormFIN among them.
If you work in a qualifying profession, it's worth knowing this option exists.

Your cover doesn't need a holiday. You do.
The school holidays have landed, and the back half of the year always seems to pick up speed from here.
Day trips, slower mornings, a bit of happy chaos at home. Amid the juggle, it's worth knowing your cover is quietly doing its job in the background — no admin required from you while you're making the most of the break.
If anything's changed for your family this year and you've been meaning to get it looked at, it'll keep until the holidays are over.
For now, enjoy the time.

Lighter evenings are back — daylight saving starts this weekend.
Daylight saving starts this Sunday, so the clocks go forward and the evenings stretch out again. A good weekend to lose an hour of sleep but gain the long, light end to the day that makes spring in New Zealand worth the wait.
It's also one of those natural reset points in the year — the kind of moment people use to tick off a few of the things that have been sitting on the list. If reviewing your cover happens to be one of them, we're here when you're ready. No rush.
Enjoy the longer evenings.
