I am sorry for any convience but the panel beaters seem to take forever when your waiting to sharpen and especially when you need stuff sharpened.

Winter Pruning !
Don't dare ask me when and how is the best time to prune... my answer is so different from my long-suffering wife's answer.
Is it winter when the sap is low or is it spring when it wants to grow and you want to show the offending vegetation who's boss ... Or is it summer time when it's finished growing and you can assess accurately how big a haircut you're going to give it?
Like any male it's about critical planning. Do it once, do it right so that you never miss out on a day's fishing because you're pruning twice in one year. Okay?
You will need loppers, pruners and secateurs all within easy reach to take care of any vegetation on your property. Be it a creeper, flower, edible or non-edible, it's just about keeping it in check so your gear has got to be right.
I have found through sharpening a huge amount of secateurs, hedge clippers, loppers are still sharp but people are not using them because they don't work properly . I kind of fell into the routine of checking loppers and pruners and secateurs found that in a lot of cases there were annoying things like the little latch that keeps them closed was not working. They were rusted and stiff to use, especially if you had arthritic fingers or wrists. More often than not they were loose or over-tightened because the nylon washer had been crushed and needed to be lubed. Please don't throw them out. Obviously there are some crap brands, cheap knock-offs, but by and large there are some really good labels out there. If you know what you're doing there are parts available and you can get them up and doing the job again.
I find stripping the tool, cleaning, buffing, lubing, and replacing washes or adding washes in most cases gets the tool working 100%
I carry small items on board so before you book me in for a sharpen, send me a photo of the tool and a description of what it is doing or not doing. I can pick up the part for you if it needs replacing and make it all work again .
With hedge clippers generally they require setting. By that I mean each separate blade is curved to create a set, which means you have a perfect guillotine action sharpening. Resetting an old pair of hedge clippers is quite often all that is required to have them doing the same job, possibly even better than a brand new pair. My cost and the parts are more often way cheaper than going out and buying a new pair like for like. Of late I've been scavenging parts from old pruners, and secateurs and loppers, which I don't usually on-charge as it's about repurposing and keeping costs to a minimum .
If you have secateurs, hedge clippers, loppers, or pruners that you don't want or you think I can help you fix them, please don't chuck them out.

I think today is a good day to talk about looking after your knives. The first point of call would be dishwashers. It's a question I'm always asked and has a variance of answers, which I think make a lot of sense so ......
Should I put my knife in the dishwasher?
Well yes you can but is it good for it and what damage is it doing?

When a knife or steel is produced the steel goes through a hardening process, which is measured at about 780°C to over a thousand depending on what type of steel
The tempering of steel however can't be affected by the heat of a dishwasher, which is only 45 to 70°C

So the temperature of a dishwasher cannot get the steel hot enough to affect its tempering to alter the sharpening or completed apex of a knife.

Myth number one: sorted 👌

However what will have an adverse effect on the steel of the knife and the finished product could be the chemical interaction and possible corrosion of the steel .
Other effects will be:
- delamination of handles
- bonding materials
- rattling of knives against each other, creating damage, dullness, with edge retention compromised.
So I tend to discourage putting good knives into dishwashers .

Knife care in the kitchen is about the Right habits
Here is me, all prim and proper, preaching to the choir and most likely doing the opposite. LOL , but seriously I've seen it in my work as a sharpener: the degradation of knives and in particular a certain brand of knives. The brand of knife is unimportant because they are a good knife but what was happening was the steel was like hokey pokey and drove me nuts trying to get a slicing edge.
Now all of that being said doesn't mean you can't put your knives into a dishwasher. Different steels, different construction, different chemicals used will all play a part in how your knives will survive and perform. There are knives out there that will never be affected. There are cheap knives that you won't care about, but more so it's about understanding what a dishwasher can do to your knife and making a decision based on risk and reward.
