Neotectonic are devastated to hear of the passing of Robert Wīremu. We fondly remember his warmth, wisdom, and generosity to the choral community across Tāmaki Makaurau - he touched our hearts in so many ways.

Robert was in the audience at our debut concert back in 2021. I fondly remember briefly chatting to him after, though he had to make a swift exit as there was a roast brewing in the oven at home!

Last year we were delighted to perform his arrangement of ‘Hine, e Hine’. In a message exchange Robert said “I’m amused that my arrangement is described as “expansive” when I really REALLY like that it’s cheesy and kitschy. It was designed to do two things: 1. To fix the scansion of the word “matua”; and 2. To be lush like cheese sauce toasted under the grill. I never really thought of it as expansive, but I’ll prepare to have my opinion changed.”

At our anniversary concert tomorrow, we will close with Te Puoho Katene’s ‘Te Aroha’, dedicated to Robert.

✨Meet the choir!✨

Meet Gnesyer, joining our wonderful alto section!

Gnesyer is a vocal coach, singer-songwriter, and music teacher from Tāmaki Makaurau who is passionate about supporting people in their vocal and holistic musical development. She graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Music (Pop Music) and has performed in both contemporary and choral settings at national and international levels.

Outside of music, Gnesyer loves to travel—whether that’s exploring museums and historical sites, heading out on a bush walk, or relaxing by the water. She also enjoys fashion, photography, and discovering great food.

✨Meet the choir! ✨

Welcome to Ben, he is joining our tenor section!

Ben has been singing in choirs for most of his life, so finding a choir was one of the first things he did after moving to Auckland from the US a few years ago. He also sings in Auckland Choral and plays bassoon in orchestras around New Zealand. When not making music Ben is a teaching-focused academic and education researcher in Physics at the University of Auckland, focusing on upper-division lab courses and how grading practices affect students’ motivation.

Will is another addition to our bass section!

Will has been singing in choirs since he was 7, highlights being NZSSC, NZ Youth Choir, Voices NZ, and NZ Opera Chorus. He was a Freemasons Emerging Artist with NZ Opera, and has recently returned from singing in Opernchor Theater Freiburg in Germany. Will now studies urban planning at Auckland University, and loves to ride his little orange bike around the city.

Meet Kiki, joining our amazing altos!

Kiki is a Classical Voice student at the University of Auckland.
She’s always been super passionate about music and performing arts, and growing up, she’s been doing heaps of dancing and theatre while also exploring her music journey.
Now, she’s singing with the Auckland Youth Choir, the Auckland Chamber Choir, the Holy Trinity Cathedral Choir and the New Zealand Youth Choir.
