Safety stock isn't extra inventory.

It's the price of uncertainty.

Yet many businesses still set safety stock based on experience.

"We normally keep four weeks."

"Let's add another pallet after that stockout."

"We've always held six weeks on this product."

None of those are calculations.

Safety stock should be driven by three things: demand variability, lead time variability, and the service level the business wants to achieve.

Change any one of them and the required safety stock changes.

That's the idea behind Part 2 of my Inventory Management Series.

Optimism Up. Margins Still Under Pressure. 02/08/2026

Confidence is improving across New Zealand business.

The challenge now is turning that optimism into profitable growth while freight, fuel and trade costs remain elevated.

Inventory management is a balancing act.

Every inventory decision is a trade-off between working capital and customer service.

The right balance depends on one thing: uncertainty.

Reduce uncertainty, and you can often improve both.

This framework summarises the central idea behind the first article in my new Inventory Management Series.

Inventory Isn't the Problem. Uncertainty Is. 29/07/2026

Reducing inventory doesn't always mean taking more risk.

One of the most common opportunities I find is that businesses have changed, but their inventory settings haven't.

Reviewing planning assumptions can unlock working capital without compromising customer service.

Sometimes the best inventory improvement starts with better questions, not lower stock levels.

Inventory Isn't the Problem. Uncertainty Is. Why reducing uncertainty, not inventory, is the key to stronger cash flow, better service and a more resilient supply chain.

Inventory Isn't the Problem. Uncertainty Is. 28/07/2026

Two businesses can sell the same products and achieve the same service levels.

Yet one may need significantly more inventory than the other.

The difference often isn't better inventory management.

It's lower uncertainty.

More predictable demand, more reliable suppliers and shorter lead times all reduce the amount of inventory required.

Inventory Isn't the Problem. Uncertainty Is. 27/07/2026

Most businesses think they have an inventory problem.

In reality, inventory isn't the problem. Uncertainty is.

Every business holds inventory to protect itself against uncertainty.

The more uncertainty you face, the more inventory you generally need.

If you want to reduce inventory sustainably, start by reducing uncertainty.

I've explored this idea in the first article of my new Inventory Management Series.

Two Chokepoints. One Invoice. 26/07/2026

Global freight is easing.

New Zealand freight isn't.

While global container freight indices continue to ease, New Zealand importers are facing a different reality, with tighter capacity, higher fuel costs, and ongoing pressure across supply chains.

Issue #10 of the HSCM NZ Supply Chain Intelligence Brief examines the latest developments and what they mean for NZ businesses.

Two Chokepoints. One Invoice. Global freight is easing. NZ freight isn't. Oil hit $100 as pressure intensified across both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb simultaneously.

Technology Doesn't Create Good Operations. It Reveals Them. 23/07/2026

Every growing business eventually reaches the same point.

Operations become harder to manage.

The first instinct is often to invest in new technology.

Sometimes that's exactly right.

Sometimes, the operation needs something else first.

New article published this week:

Technology Doesn't Create Good Operations. It Reveals Them. Technology doesn't create operational discipline. It reinforces it — and reveals whatever was already there.

Freight rates finally fell.

Good news—but it's only part of the story.

Oil, tariffs and inflation continue to shape the broader cost environment.

A freight peak is not the same as a cost recovery.

That's the focus of this week's NZ Supply Chain Intelligence Brief:

Cash Flow Isn't Just a Finance Issue. It's a Supply Chain Issue. 13/07/2026

We were pleased to contribute to the French-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce and Industry's SME Business Toolkit, discussing how supply chain decisions influence cash flow, business resilience and rising costs for New Zealand SMEs.

The discussion highlights practical opportunities around supplier management, freight and inventory that many businesses can explore before considering price increases.

Cash Flow Isn't Just a Finance Issue. It's a Supply Chain Issue. A large share of cash flow is determined upstream, by supplier terms, freight decisions, and inventory levels.
