A tale of tara iti: Naturing through storytime DOC is excited to celebrate the launch of a beautiful new children’s book that brings one of Aotearoa’s rarest native birds to life, the tara iti (NZ fairy tern).

On October 23rd, my latest book will be released to the world, written in collaboration with The NZ Fairy Tern Charitable Trust and the stunning illustrations by NZ Illustrator, Rebecca Gibbs. Featuring the NZ Fairy Tern, Dotterel and Oyster Catcher.
Iti the Hungry Fairy Tern is based on a true story about a tara iti (Fairy Tern) chick and a Department of Conservation Ranger, Shelley Ogle, and her fellow rangers. Together, they save an abandoned Fairy Tern chick by teaching it how to find and catch food for itself, and then for its own family.
With fewer than 40 left in the wild, this tiny bird faces immense challenges but continues to fight for survival with the help of dedicated conservationists. The Department of Conservation works in partnership with mana whenua, local organisations, community groups and volunteers to support the recovery of the tara iti population.
