🦋 Butterfly Conservation 🦋
These holidays, we're focusing on butterfly conservation and what we can do to help the butterflies.
Every Monday to Thursday in Boneyard Room, you can write a pledge of something you're going to do to help the butterflies or a tip that others could do and stick it on our conservation board.

School holiday fun is coming to Butterfly Creek these holidays! 🦋
Starting this Saturday, we've got something fun to do every day around the park. Get your friends and family together for a butterfly-tastic holidays spent learning about butterflies, seeing the walking dinos and watching lots of free animal encounters!

Once upon a time, wētāpunga were found in our backyards but through invasive pests like hedgehogs and rats, these amazing insects are harder to find (if at all).
Since 2009, we've been dedicated to wētāpunga conservation and increasing populations in Aotearoa. In the last 17 years, we've released thousands of wētāpunga onto pest-free island sanctuaries such as Tiritiri Matangi Island, Motuora Island and Tāwharanui and Shakespear Regional Parks with our latest release in May this year on Matakohe-Limestone Island.
As Aotearoa seeks to become predator free by 2050, there's a lot that we can do in our communities to help reach this goal with the hope of seeing wētāpunga in our own gardens. Joining a community trapping group is a good option. There are groups all over Auckland and throughout Aotearoa. If you're interested in finding a group, you can find one near you on the Predator Free NZ website here: https://predatorfreenz.org/get-involved/find-a-group/
Also, if you're in Auckland, you can visit pest-free islands like Tiritiri Matangi Island or Motuihe Island. Catch a ferry to the islands for the opportunity to see restored native bush and wētāpunga that have been bred and released as part of our captive rear and release programme.

Today, we're learning about mokomoko 🦎
Mokomoko is the broad term that geckos, iguanas, monitor lizards, skinks and anguimorphs all fall under.
There are over 7000 mokomoko species worldwide. We even have some mokomoko species only found in Aotearoa such as the Northland Green Gecko, Auckland Green Gecko and the Forest Gecko 🦎

Today, we're learning about the pirikoti.
Pirikoti are extremely social animals and live in groups named herds. They are very intelligent and similar to dogs, can learn and respond to their own name.
Pirikoti are naturally curious animals who love exploring. They love trying new things, exploring their environment and standing on their back legs to reach food.
