Sheltopusik close up 👀

Have you visited our sheltopusik? Also known as a European Glass Lizard, the sheltopusik looks like a snake but is actually part of the lizard family. They are a legless lizard species that can grow up to 1.35 metres long and they are often found in arid grasslands and vegetated valleys native to Southern Europe and Central Asia.

🌟 Mānawatia a Matariki from Butterfly Creek 🌟

Today we celebrate the 9 stars of Matariki – each with a special meaning and connection to the world around us.
As we look to the skies and welcome the Māori New Year, we shine the spotlight on some of our animals and exhibits that represent the beautiful meanings behind several of the Matariki stars.

🪦 Pōhutukawa – honouring those who have passed (represented by our otter matriarch Asia)
🌿 Tupuānuku – food from the earth (our rats enjoying star-shaped pumpkin treats)
🦋 Tupuārangi – food from above (butterflies feeding from fruit laid out in the Matariki constellation)
💧 Waitī – freshwater (our slippery friends, the eels )
🌊 Waitā – saltwater
🌧 Waipuna-ā-Rangi – rain and renewal
💨 Ururangi – the winds
🕊 Hiwa-i-te-Rangi – wishes, aspirations and new beginnings (symbolised by our wētāpunga and our shared conservation journey)
✨ Matariki – the star that brings us all together, representing reflection, unity and hope

Matariki is a time to come together, reflect, and celebrate with friends and family. It's the perfect opportunity to create special memories with your loved ones – and a visit to Butterfly Creek is a great way to do just that. Come explore, connect with nature, and enjoy a fun day out.
