Run, run, as fast as you can… you can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!

Our love for The Gingerbread Man inspired us to make our very own! We made the dough, rolled it out, chose our cutters and popped our gingerbread men into the oven — hoping they wouldn’t run away like they do in the story! Thankfully, they stayed put and we then got to decorate them exactly how we wanted. A fun story brought to life through baking, creativity and a little bit of imagination!

Garden to Table!

Today we noticed that our broccoli growing in the garden was ready to be picked, so it was time to bring some of our garden treasures into the kitchen!
There was lots of excitement as we watched our freshly picked vegetables turn into something we could all enjoy together!
We love these opportunities to show tamariki where our food comes from, encourage them to try new foods and experience the whole process from garden to table.

A very tasty way to learn!

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Ake Ake Ake

What a wonderful week we have had celebrating and embracing te reo Māori here at TLL!

We have filled our days with waiata, singing, music, poi and rākau sticks, explored a te reo Māori number hunt (and discovered just how confidently our tamariki can count!), and explored Nani Mihi’s Rainbow, creating our own rainbow using colours in te reo Māori.

We explored the Māori flag, Māori patterns and symbols and their meanings, made our own tīpare, and shared our TLL values of Manaaki mai, Awhina mai and Aroha mai.

We brought pūrākau to life through Māui and how he slowed the sun, making our own storytelling props and ropes to retell the story, as well as creating taniwha sock puppets to help us retell and sing the taniwha story.

And to finish our week, we made and shared some delicious parāoa parai (fry bread) together!

While Te Wiki o te Reo Māori gives us a special opportunity to celebrate and share more with our whānau, Ake Ake Ake reminds us that te reo Māori is a forever part of our practice here at TLL.

We are proud to share a little glimpse of how te reo Māori is woven throughout our days, our curriculum and our learning — ake ake ake!

Sign for Change at TLL

Throughout August, we were so proud to be part of Sign for Change, celebrating and promoting New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).

NZSL is a valued and important part of our curriculum here at TLL, and you’ll see our kaiako and tamariki using signs naturally throughout our everyday routines, play and learning. Being part of Sign for Change gave us the wonderful opportunity to learn a new sign each day and share these with those around us.

It was a beautiful way to help make one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s official languages more visible in everyday life, while supporting our children to communicate, connect and include others.

We are so proud of our tamariki and all the enthusiasm they showed throughout the month. We hope you’ll learn a few signs alongside them too!

Today we explored what happens when warm, coloured water meets cold water!

The tamariki watched in amazement as the dye came out like little clouds of “smoke”, floating to the surface before slowly sinking and dispersing through the cold water.

We discovered that the hotter the water, the faster the colour dispersed! Lots of curiosity, predictions and wonderful conversations happened as we watched our experiment unfold.
